The sinus rhythm resting heart rates of 138 schizophrenic patients were monitored electrocardiographically each for 30 min and were compared with those of 139 healthy controls. It was found that a signifìcant sinus tachycardia existed in the patients. Factors of chronologic age, sex and treatment by psychotropic drugs were non-significant. A subsample of 22 process schizophrenic patients was compared with 20 healthy controls, matched for age, monitored continuously for a minimum of 120 min and analyzed by autocorrelation on a minute-by-minute basis for cardiac rate variation. Ultradian rhythms of each group revealed that the periodicity of cardiac rate variation in schizophrenia was significantly longer than that in health. Treatment by psychotropic drugs in half of the patient sample did not appear to influence the cardiac rate variation. It is suggested that the bradycardia existing between pulses of tachycardia in schizophrenia may be responsible not only for the dysplastic perception of these patients, but also for their premature death from vascular causes

In patients suffering from chronic pain, visual evoked potentials (VEP) and pain measures (PM) were investigated before and after a 4-week, double-blind, controlled study of a new, rather selective, serotonin-reuptake inhibitor, Zimelidine, versus placebo. Before the trial most of the patients showed an augmenter response in VEP which means that the maximum amplitude of the evoked potential increased when stimulus intensity increased. After treatment most of the patients in the Zimelidine group revealed a reducer response, i.e. the maximum amplitude of the evoked potential decreased despite the increase of stimulus intensity, while no significant changes occurred in the placebo group. Only small and mostly insignificant changes were noted in PM. The results indicate that the augmenter-reducer response in VEP may be a useful measurement for following changes in the serotoninergic pathways in CNS. The results also indicate that treatment with Zimelidine may result in a decreased sensitivity to noxious stimulation that should be reflected in relief of clinical pain syndromes.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role played by stressful life events in completed suicide and to find out to what extent similar experiences occur at corresponding periods of life among persons, who do not commit suicide. The suicide group was drawn from a prospective psychiatric cohort study of 3,563 persons, followed during 25 years (The Lundby Study). The suicide persons had all been examined by psychiatrists on one or two occasions at a ‘normal’ period of their lives. Two control groups from the same population were used: one age- and sex-matched normal group, one sex-matched group of deceased persons, who had died of nonviolent causes at the same ages as the corresponding suicide persons. Acute psychiatric illness was the most prominent factor immediately preceding the suicide. 26 out of the total of 28 suicide persons were considered psychiatrically ill at time of suicide. More suicide persons than controls had experienced undesirable events such as: blow to the self-esteem; object loss; problems at work; sickness reporting, and moving of house. The findings suggest that persons, who finally commit suicide have received more than their due share of the hardships of life. In a controlled study the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) in red and white blood cells, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GT) and lysozyme in serum and white blood cells was studied in 22 drug-free schizophrenic patients and 17 healthy volunteers. The activities of the above enzymes were found to be reduced in the white cells of schizophrenics compared with controls. The differences in activity of G-6-PD in red cells and of γ-GT and lysozyme in serum between the two groups were not revealed as significant. The observed low enzyme activities might provide a further basis for interpreting the reported functional deficiency in neutrophils of schizophrenics. The REG technique permitting an estimation of the grey matter flow was applied in conjunction with the simultaneous recording of the EEG analysed by the SULG manual method with 21 normal adult subjects. A relationship was established between the REG index and the EEG frequency index in a resting situation with eyes closed. An increase of the REG index was observed when the eyes were open, for looking at a picture and during a test of visual attention. At opening of the eyes a delay is observed between the desynchronisation of the EEG and the increase of the REG.

Six WHO Collaborating Centre took part in the study of the antithymic activity of blood sera of patients suffering from schizophrenia. Blood serum specimens from 118 schizophrenic patients and 62 mentally healthy donors were investigated. Statistically significant differences between schizophrenic patients and the controls were found (p < 0.05). It is probable that as with other biological phenomena described in schizophrenia, antithymic activity is one of the biological factors, in combination with other factors, predisposing towards the development of the schizophrenic process.
