On the assumption that neuromelanin content might be a parameter indicating neuronal activity in the catecholaminergic system, neuromelanin was measured microspectro-photometrically in the substantia nigra and the locus ceruleus of 12 brains of patients who had undergone neuroleptic therapy. Neuromelanin increased with age in both regions of 40 control brains. Although no signifícant difference in melanin content between medicated and control brains was seen, a high negative correlation (r = –0.79) was noted in melanin content between the substantia nigra and the locus ceruleus only in each medicated brain, especially in cases of schizophrenia. The simultaneous recording of bilateral electrodermal activity (skin potential responses) on both right and left hands (the reference electrode being located on the forearm under the skin) on 30 right-handed subjects during the reflection phase of a verbal cognitive task and a stressful situation showed that, contrary to the expectations related to the hypothesis of lateralization, the percentage of equal amplitude (right and left) SPRs is very high in both situations, and SPRs are significantly less lateralized in the stressful situation than in the verbal task.

20 psychiatric patients without pharmacologic therapy and an homogeneous control group of 19 healthy subjects have been submitted to an electroencephalographic (EEG) investigation. Computerized spectral analyses of the main EEG frequency bands have been performed. The spectra have been determined by some geometrical descriptors: the relative activity, the barycentric frequency and the barycentric radius; also classic descriptors have been used as complementary ones. In the EEG profìle signifícant differences between patients and healthy subjects have been found. Some differences have also been observed among subgroups of schizophrenic patients. The geometrical descriptors applied in the EEG analysis are suggested as a useful method in the description of the basic characteristics of the main EEG frequency band

Some evidence has been presented in previous articles supporting the hypothesis that relevant relationships may occur between clinical symptoms of depression and complex EEG features investigated by means of a systemic structural analysis (SSA). The present paper deals with a closer analysis of the clinical-neurophysiological relationships in depressive syndromes. 22 untreated depressed patients of both sexes participated in the study. The patients were rated by means of the Cronholm and Ottosson Rating Scale for Depression (CORSD) at the time of the EEG investigation. Special computer programs were used to investigate the relationships between clinical symptoms and elementary EEG characteristics. It was found that symptoms comprised in the ‘anxiety-depression’ subscale of the CORSD were related to fast activity in the EEG, whereas symptoms comprised in the ‘retardation’ subscale showed signifìcant relationships with slow EEG activity. The bone mineral content and the serum levels of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (iPTH), and protein-corrected calcium and magnesium were measured in 13 manic depressive patients before and duringtreatment with lithium. In 48 patients with schizophrenia and 32 patients with affective disorders, different immune parameters were tested. Compared to blood-donors, IgG and IgM serum concentrations were increased in both the schizophrenic and affective disorders. However, these abnormalities did not differ from hospital control populations. The patients failed to show an association of antibodies considered to be characteristic of autoimmune diseases. In addition, no increased incidence of circulating immune complexes was detected. The only substantial serologic abnormality found was an elevation of C4 levels in patients with bipolar psychosis.

The blood platelet may be considered as an interesting model of the serotoninergic neuron in biology and pharmacology. We studied some platelet parameters in neuropsychiatric patients (depressive and schizophrenic ones): serotonin (5-HT) uptake was abnormal for all schizophrenics and lowered for depressive patients; uptake of mepacrine, amarker of 5-HT passive diffusion, was diminished for manic patients; MAO and glutathione peroxidase activities were modified, essentially for paranoid schizophrenics and some alterations of the platelet hydroxyindole level were noticed; during treatment with neuroleptics or antidepressants biological parameters led to ‘normality’. In 60 patients, hospitalized for a depressive syndrome, visual average evoked potentials (V.AEP) to stimuli of different intensities and the occurrence of life-events during the last year, as assessed by means of a specially constructed questionnaire, were investigated. Patients with an augmenter response in V.AEP, i.e. a tendency to react with increasing maximum amplitude of the evoked potential when stimulus intensity is increased, were found to report more life-events, to report more life-events as extremely difficult, and to report adaptation after the life-event as difficult. Thus it seems clear that it is not only of importance to investigate the number and characteristics of life-events that occurred, but also to bring attention to the perceptual reactance of the person experiencing the event.
