摘要:
ABSTRACTOne result of an expansion of tourism is an ever increasing demand for game fishing. In Scotland, many important salmonid producing areas are being afforested with plantations of coniferous trees. The effects of such plantations on the fauna of the streams flowing through them have received little attention. It was thought that useful information on the implications of widespread afforestation could be obtained from a detailed survey of a single stream. The stream chosen for the study was Kirk Burn, a small tributary of the famous salmon river, the Tweed. For most of its course, the stream flows through a Forestry Commission plantation of larch, Norway and Sitka spruce. There are, however, open areas of land above and below the forest which could, to some extent, be considered as controls. The presence of a deciduous spinney near the confluence made it possible to compare the effects of riparian coniferous trees with hardwoods.Invertebrates and fish were considerably less abundant where the stream was densely shaded by coniferous trees. This paucity of the fauna is largely attributable to the indirect effects of reduced illumination of the stream surface and banks. Disturbance of the streamside environment during silvicultural activities and the nature of the allochthonous input are also thought to be important contributory factors. The possible implications of increased afforestation on fish populations are discussed. Changes in forestry practices, to minimize deleterious effects, are suggested.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe spawning of roach on artificial substrate using pituitary injection is described. The sur vival and growth of these fish is compared with fish taken from a natural environment. Sur vival is found to be as good as the natural fish provided an adequate initial size is reached before stocking.

摘要:
ABSTRACTSimple conditions and techniques for spawning and rearing the eggs of dace (Leuciscus leuciscus) are described. Incubation at ambient temperatures (mean 8.8°C, range 4.1–13.8°C) in chalk spring water gave a 94,0% hatch. Incubation in river water resulted in a much lower hatching, probably due to silt deposition. A simple exponential model is used to describe the relationship between temperature and hatching t

摘要:
ABSTRACTExperimental work has shown that the use of grass carp for aquatic weed control in the U.K. is promising and larger scale field trials are planned. Supplies of fish, however, are a problem because of stringent import regulations and this has highlighted the need for home‐produced fish. Brood stock obtained from Holland in April and kept under quarantine conditions were successfully spawned in July by means of injections of common carp pituitary gland material. Water temperatures were maintained at 23–25°C for about 9 weeks before spawning was attempted and the eggs were hatched and fry reared at the same temperatures. Survival to late fry (0.1 g) was of the order of 5% which is judged reasonable under the conditions prevai
