Analysis of the vocal behaviour of adult males from different species of Cercopithecus monkeys in a polyspecific troop shows important species differences, which suggest a superspecific organization upon which the extraordinary stability of certain polyspecific associations can depend. In the community studied, the male Cercopithecus pogonias generally controlled the formation and disbanding of polyspecific troops, coordinated their movements and the spacing between troops, while Cercopithecus cephus seemed to be the ‘follower’ species. Many investigators may feel that studies involving group manipulations involving older animals are untenable, fearing that such manipulations may harm or over-stress aged subjects. The present study demonstrates the safety of a technique which not only introduced aged rhesus monkeys into two groups, but resulted in their attaining planned dominance rank positions in each of the groups: one set of 4 as the highest ranking and the other set of 4 as the lowest ranking. The manipulation also effected the social behavior of the old animals isolating the high ranking males from social activity in their group.

We present an analysis of observational data on the behavior profiles for two groups of infant langur monkeys (Presbytis entellus): one that had experienced mother loss, and the other, a control group, that had not undergone mother loss. Observations were analyzed in three 2-week time periods: 2 preseparation, 2 separation, and 2 postseparation periods for both groups. The profile analysis application of the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was employed to test the hypothesis that the two groups had similar patterns of change across time. For each group a vector of 5 difference scores was computed; then MANOVA was used to test the similarity of the mean vectors of difference scores for the two groups. Profiles for the separation and control infants were significantly different for some behaviors, and changes between some time periods were also significant.

Variations were observed at the prealbumin-2, carbonic anhydrase-I, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase-II and adenylate kinase loci in Erythrocebus patas subspecies pynhonotus. But the level of heterozygosity was very low compared with those of the different African monkey species studied by the same electrophoretic analysis. The reasons for this low variation are discussed with regard to ethological and genetic structure characteristics of the group studied.

The first blood group system to be defined in baboons by means of isoimmune agglutinating reagents is composed of five graded types: B4, B3, B2, B1and b, inherited, as postulated, by five allelic genes with decreasing dominance order. There are significant differences in distribution of the Bp blood groups between hamadryas baboons on the one hand, and cynocephalus and anubis on the other, which may serve as auxiliary taxonomic criteria. Antibodies of specificities related to the Bp graded antigens are found in the sera of presumably nonimmunized baboons, and also in the rhesus isoimmune antisera that detect one of the subtypes of the so-called Drh graded system of macaques. These findings point to ubiquity of the Bp or Bp-like antigens, and to the close serological relationship between Bp baboon and Drh macaque red cell antigens, perhaps as evidence of a common ancestral antigen which gave rise to a diverging set of graded subspecificities of baboon and macaque red cells, respectively.

The karyotype of Saguinus labiatus labiatus was determined by the Giemsa-banding technique on leukocytes cultured from 10 marmosets. The diploid chromosome number (2n = 46) was the same and the chromosome complement similar to other marmosets of genus Saguinus. Small karyotypic differences were found between S. l. labiatus and white-lipped marmosets (Saguinus fuscicollis) in the size of the X chromosome and in the banding pattern of one pair of metacentric chromosomes. A karyotypic variant was detected in 1 S. l. labiatus, characterized by a diploid chromosome number of 45 with balanced autosomal translocation involving two pairs of acrocentric chromosomes (T 16/19).

The karyotype, comprised of 62 chromosomes, of Galago crassicaudatus is described. It is compared to the karyotype of Galago senegalensis and to that of the presumed common ancestor to Lorisiforms, previously reconstructed. Most of the reconstructed chromosomes were found, unmodified, in G. crassicaudatus, strengthening the validity of the reconstruction.
