摘要:
In a study of social behavior of free-ranging vervet monkeys living along the Zambezi River near Livingstone, Zambia, 295 observations were made in which a juvenile female directed some type of maternal behavior toward an infant. Juvenile females showed a high degree of interest in young infants and would touch, cuddle, carry and groom infants whenever they could. This opportunity to care for infants provides juvenile females with situations in which they can practice not only motor skills that are important in maternal behavior but also playing the maternal role itself.

摘要:
In the Middle Atlas of Morocco Macaca sylvana live in multimale groups of 12 to 30 individuals. With extensive home range overlap intergroup encounters are frequent, usually peaceful and variable in nature. The social interactions of babies are described and particular attention is paid to male care of babies and male-male encounters in which one male appears to use a baby to regulate his behaviour with another. This type of interaction is called ‘agonistic buffering’. The terminology used to describe male-baby (or infant) interactions and the possible significance of agonistic buffering, in this and other non-human primates, are discus

摘要:
Observations of Hylobates klossii were made during a one-week expedition to the offshore Mentawai Islands in western Sumatra. The 4 groups observed appeared to be monogamous families. Locomotive behavior of H. klossii seemed intermediate between that of H. syndactylus and H. lar. Animals were seen eating figs and berries. Protracted calling sessions were heard in the morning and evening; these may be suppressed by rain. The indigenous Mentawai people selectively log forests around their villages and occasionally hunt H. klossii for food with bow and arrow; these old established practices may reduce local population levels around villages, but probably have little effect upon the total species population. Some animals are captured for the pet and export trades, but the most serious threat to H. klossii is commercial logging by foreign companies which may be imminent on the Mentawai Islands.

摘要:
One chimpanzee can convey to others, who have no other source of information, the presence, direction, quality, and relative quantity or preference value of distant hidden objects that he himself has not seen for several minutes. Exchange of information about objects and events probably requires no human training, or specialized ethological displays, or language.

摘要:
Observations on the sexual behavior of 2 species of spider monkeys, Ateles belzebuth and A. geoffroyi indicate that primary sexual behavior is diurnal and, in contrast to groups of Saimiri sciureus sympatric with A. belzebuth at a South American study site, non-seasonal. The copulatory posture taken by the male spider monkey during penile insertion is different from that described for any other primate. Behavioral data strongly support the hypothesis that the transmission of information concerning female sexual receptivity is via chemical stimuli, and that the primary function of the female spider monkey’s hypertrophied clitoris is the deposition of urinary scent

摘要:
The recessus mesocoelicus was studied in Cebus, Macaca fascicularis and in Pan troglodytes. The shape of this recessus is variable within and across species (funnel-shaped, simple tube, a tube ending with 2 smaller diverticula). The ependyma of the oral wall of the recessus is of the same kind as the ependyma of the subcommissural organ, whereas the ependyma of the caudal wall has changed in Macaca and Pan in the sense, that it has obviously lost its secretory activity. No Reissner’s fibre was found in the recessus in the specimen studie

摘要:
The karyotypes of 22 South American owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus) are surveyed. Animals were assigned on the basis of coat color variation to two previously described subspecies, Aotus trivirgatus griseimembra and Aotus trivirgatus trivirgatus. A Robertsonian polymorphism, distributed consistent with a Hardy-Weinberg equi librium, was found among 17 Aotus trivirgatus griseimembra, whose diploid numbers were 54, 53, and 52. The 5 Aotus trivirgatus trivirgatus all had diploid numbers of 54. Their karyotypes are significantly different from those of Aotus trivirgatus griseimembra, however, and may indicate the need for taxonomic re-classification.

摘要:
A 16½-year-old male gorilla died unexpectedly and suddenly. He had thrombophlebitis, estimated at one month duration, involving his left leg, pelvic veins and inferior vena cava. Death was due to fracture of the larynx with hemorrhage into the neck, resulting in asphyxia. A most important finding was immaturity and atrophy of the spermatogenic portion of the testes with normal or increased interstitial cells. Bobo did not have a proven sex chromosome abnormality but he did have a few cells with a 49 chromosome count, suggesting mosaicism for an autosomal chromosome. Testicular atrophy in gorillas has been reported frequently. It is suggested that further investigation of testicular abnormality in the gorilla may offer some explanation for their relative infertility
