AbstractBackground.Rasp21, arasoncogene product, plays an important role in tumorigenesis, proliferation, and differentiation in various tissues and cells.Methods. Using a monocolonal antibody raised againstrasp21 (RASK 4), localization ofrasp21 in normal epidermis and involved epidermis of various skin diseases was examined immunohistologically.Results.Rasp21 was not present in basal cells of normal epidermis or basaloid cells of basal cell epithelioma but was found almost evenly in the cytoplasm of squamous cells and granular cells. This suggests thatrasp21 is concerned with differentiation of epidermal cells. The mode of distribution ofrasp21 differed from one cell to another in epidermal cells that turned to malignancy. The distribution was uneven and irregular in the tumorous region on the whole.Conclusions. This result might possibly represent abnormal differentiation of epidermal cells that turned to malignancy, deviating from the regular mode of the distribution ofrasp21, which is necessary for normal differentiation.

AbstractBackground. Pityriasis alba is a common dermatitis, but only a few histologic studies have been reported and most of these maintain that its microscopic features are those of a chronic nonspecific dermatitis.Methods. A retrospective light microscopic study was performed on biopsy specimens taken from 39 patients with localized pityriasis alba on face, arms and forearms without signs of atopy. Thirty‐two patients were girls or women and seven were boys or men, with ages ranging from 7 to 37 years. The duration of illness varied from 1 month to 10 years. The clinical picture was characterized by three clinical stages: papular erythematous, papular hypochromic, and smooth hypochromic.Results. The histologic study revealed features that were suggestive, though not pathognomonic, of the diagnosis. The most remarkable changes involved the pilary apparatus, which showed horny plugs, spongiotic edema, and atrophic sebaceous glands. There was also a disturbance of melanization secondary to epithelial damage. The tissue reaction was more conspicuous in the skin lesions with follicular papules.Conclusions. A histopathologic diagnosis of pityriasis alba may be proposed when the following features are seen in a biopsy specimen taken from a skin lesion with follicular papules: (1) irregular pigmentation by melanin of the basal layer; (2) follicular plugging; (3) follicular spongiosis; and (4) atrophic sebaceous gland

AbstractBackground. A study of nine Guatemalan patients with acquired perforating disease associated with chronic renal failure, diagnosed at the Guatemalan Social Security Institute, General Hospital, during the period of January 1990 to March 1993, is presented (Table 1).Methods. A dermatological examination and skin biopsy were done on all patients.Results. Six of the patients were men and three were women; one case was associated with diabetes mellitus. Three of the patients were diagnosed as Kyrle‐like acquired perforating disease, and the other six as perforating folliculitis. The lesions were predominantly located in the lower extremities with hyperkeratotic papules and nodules; some of these were accompanied by pruritus and Koebner's phenomenon.Conclusion. The acquired perforating disease is a clinical cutaneous manifestation of chronic renal failure with or without treatment. 摘要:
AbstractBackground. Onychomycosis is a major cause of nail dystrophy. The causative organisms in onychomycosis are dermatophytes, Candida and molds. A variety of molds have been isolated from nails.Methods:Nail scrapings and clippings were collected from 100 cases and inoculated on slants containing SDA with cycloheximide 0.5 mg/mL, chloramphenicol 0.05 mg/mL, and SDA with chloramphenicol 0.05 mg/mL.Results:The culture positivity rate for molds was 22%. The predominant mold isolates were Aspergillus species (86.4%, Fusarium oxysporum (4.5%), Curvularia species (4.5%) and Penicillium species (4.5%).Conclusion:Primary invasion of nails by molds can cause onychomycosis.
