ABSTRACT:The pathologic findings in the skin in a new case of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) are detailed and are discussed in view of previously reported data on TSS in the literature. Necrolysis of keratinocytes at different levels of the epidermis In combination with a predominantly perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate were characteristic features in lesional skin biopsy specimens obtained 5 days after the onset of acute illness and during the development of erythroderma with purpura and diffuse intravasal coagulation. Prominent vascular changes in the skin, which have not been reported before in TSS, were excited endothelial cells in combination with the presence of thrombi in the superficial capillaries. Histopathologic investigations of the dermatitis in TSS can be helpful in differentiating this syndrome from other acute toxic skin eruptions.

ABSTRACT:Responses to ultraviolet B (UVB; 290–320 nm) were tested in 227 patients with main forms of lupus erythematosus (LE): discoid LE (OLE), discoid disseminated LE (DOLE), systemic LE (SLE), and subacute cutaneous LE (SCLE). Four parameters were evaluated: minimal erythema dose (MED), its distribution, persistence of erythema, and photoreproduction of lesions. Patients with LE differed considerably from controls in their UVB reactivity. In addition, there were significant differences between various LE forms, even after a single UV exposure. Lowered MED in comparison to controls was observed most frequently in SLE patients (64.4%) and least frequently in OLE patients (32.1%). Prolonged persistence of erythema induced by 1–2 MED was a constant finding in SCLE. In SLE and DOLE, it was observed in more than 80% of patients, and in OLE in 56.7% of examined cases. ABSTRACT:Identification of patients with subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) in Iceland was performed by means of a survey based on the histopathologic or immunofluorescent diagnosis of lupus erythematosus. Respondents underwent serologic studies, gave histories, and, dependent upon the latter, were examined. The resultant proportional rate of patients with SCLE approached 10% of all lupus erythematosus cases.

ABSTRACT:Comparative studies were performed on clinical and laboratory features of four patients with different types of T‐cell lymphoma of the skin; adult T‐cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), Sézary syndrome, mycosis fungoides, and Ki‐1‐positive lymphoma. All neoplastic cells studied showed a helper‐inducer T‐cell phenotype. A Ki‐1‐positive lymphoma is distinct from other types of cutaneous lymphomas because of unique morphologic and phenotypic features. Clonal proliferation of lymphocytes infected by human T‐cell lymphotrophic virus (HTLV)‐l distinguishes ATLL from other T‐cell lymphomas of the skin, especially in the endemic area of ATLL. From the pathogeneic point of view, ATLL should not be included in a group with mycosis fungoid

ABSTRACT:Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia is a rare but distinctive clinicopathologic entity. A study of seven cases and review of the literature strongly suggests that both conditions represent a single disease spectrum. The relation of this condition to Kimura's disease is controversial. The descriptive term angiolymphoid hyperplasia with tissue eosinophilia is proposed.
