ABSTRACT:Although a variety of complement values have been reported in leprosy, we found no difference in the CH50and C3in the sera of 30 normal persons and 233 lepromatous patients. No statistically significant difference was observed in CH50and C3values between healthy controls and lepromatous patients taken as a whole or separated into the different types of the disease spectrum (P>0.1). A statistical difference in C3titers was found between health controls and borderline patients (P0.01) but the sample number is too small to be valid. An important number of sera tested had low and an equally important number had high complement values. Sera with high and low values are important because high values are found in acute inflammatory reactions and low values demonstrate complement activation. Discrepancies in reported results are probably due not only to differences in the methods used, storage and limited number of sera tested, but mainly to the stage of the disease and the drug's administration.

ABSTRACT:The data pertaining to skin cancers registered in three departments of pathology in Indonesia revealed that squamous cell carcinoma showed the highest frequency, followed by basal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. The distribution of skin cancers, the sex, age and anatomic localization of affected patients and the relationship that have been observed between these characteristics are described.

ABSTRACT:The cutaneous lesions of seven consecutive patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus (LE), two patients with systemic LE, and a patient with both dermatomyositis and cutaneous LE, were studied bacteriologically and microscopically for the presence of bacteria. The study was prompted by the previous reports of variably acid‐fast and non‐acid‐fast bacteria in other collagen diseases, and also by recent reports confirming the presence of cell wall deficient (CWD) bacteria (staphylococci, streptococci, and corynebacteria) within the hematologic elements of both “normal” and diseased individuals. Staphylococcus epidermis was isolated from four cases, Propionibacterium acnes from two cases, and Corynebacterium sp. from one case. Three cases were bacteriologically negative. Basophilic and eosinophilic‐stained coccoid forms, suggestive of CWD bacteria, were identified in the microscopic sections of all the cases, as were non‐acid‐fast coccoid forms. Definite acid‐fast coccoid forms were observed in vivo in two cases of cutaneous LE. The complex bacteriology of LE is discussed, as well as the possibility that variably acid‐fast CWD microbes might be the long sought‐after etiologic agent or agents in
