In an investigation of 541 members of a hospital cleaning department, a prevalence rate of occupational skin diseases of 15.3% was found. During their hospital employment, 39.1% had it skin disease. Higher prevalence in the younger age groups can be explained by the selection of those with skin diseases for work away from the cleaning department. A large number developed their disease shortly after employment began. This was an indication that the observed prevalent conditions were irritant diseases. The distribution by diagnosis confirms this conclusion in as much as 75% of the occupational skin diseases were irritant dermatitis, 21% allergic contact dermatitis, and 4% monilia of the finger webs.The causes of allergic contact dermatitis were found to be formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and chloramine in addition to nickel and rubber. Among the causes of irritant dermatitis were detergents, alkaline substances, acids and sodium perborate as well as hypochlorite, and hypobromite combinations.In order to reduce occupational skin diseases among cleaning personnel, it is necessary to extend both local and more general prophylactic measures.

摘要:
Several pharmacopoeias set limits on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content in petrolatum. UV absorbance measurement of aromatic extracts of petrolatum sample has been shown to be a more reliable method than direct UV absorbance measurement as prescribed by several pharmacopoeias for the determination of that content, but the presence of allergenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons does not always correlate with lower UV absorbance. Biological tests are ultimately the only certain method of detecting biologically active compounds. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can also be irritant and carcinogenic. Therefore, University uniform and very stringent limits should be set restricting their presence in pharmaceutical grade petrolatum.

摘要:
6 patients developed a rash while working in a dry battery manufacturing industry. Patch tests showed that clothing accounted for the dermatitis in 5 of the patients. One of them who worked with bitumen had an acneiform eruption and eye irritation. Environmental measurements indicated excessive environmental heat, sweating and maceration as predisposing factors for the development of clothing dermatitis in workers who wore dark coloured uniforms. The working posture also made the anterior abdominal wall highly vulnerable.

Investigations on light reactions in a patient with vitiligo are presented. The minimal erythema dose (MED)in the UVB area was approximately 1/1 of that in persons of skin type II. The application of furocoumarins (psoralens) increased light tolerance by 1 MED at 300–310 mm. Action spectrum studies with furocoumarins fromHeracleum laciniatumshowed the following order of potency: bergapten, Pimpinellin, angelicin and sphondin. The certified drug and cosmetic dye substance known as D&C Yellow No. 11 [2‐(2‐quinolyl)‐1,3 indandione] was tested for its dermal sensitization potential in guinea pigs. An induction regimen consisting of a single footpad injection of Complete Freund's Adjuvant diluted with antigen, and an intradermal injection of antigen, produced delayed‐type hypersensitivity reactions. A high sensitization frequency was observed with 50 μg D&C Yellow No. 11 and the positive control 2,4‐dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). The reaction severities of both DNCB and 50 μg D&C Yellow No. 11 were comparable, A dose‐response profile was obtained with D&C Yellow No. 11 employing several concentrations (50, 250 and 500 μg/ml). Systemic absorption of metal or metallic salts from dental and orthopedic surgical implants can produce a cutaneous allergic dermatitis in susceptible individuals. Mercury, nickel and cobalt are the most common metals to elicit such systemic allergic reactions from chronic internal exposure. A case is presented of a generalized eczematoid dermatitis apparently caused by allergy to chromium liberated from a metal dental plate.

On turpentine being removed from the standard international series, and seeing that the % of positives in Spain were high, the Spanish group decided to study chromatographically the components of turpentine in order to know which of these components is present in the highest proportion. Various samples of turpentine are studied and the results are shown.

摘要:
The skin irritant properties of both the juice expressed from the ripe berries and the slimy mucilage present in the rhizomes of black bryony (Tamus communisL.) were investigated. The dermatitis produced on human skin after gently rubbing in either the berry juice or the rhizome mucilage was found in both cases to be a result of mechanical irritation, being produced by penetration of the skin by minute needle‐like crystals of calcium oxalate. Scanning electron micrographs supporting this conclusion are presented. Chemical investigation of the rhizome mucilage confirmed the presence of histamine.
