The occurrence of occupational contact dermatitis among workers in a rubber factory from 1976 to 1980 was studied. Insurance compensation was paid to 50 workers with dermatitis. 21 of the cases were allergic and 27 toxic contact dermatitis, giving a contact dermatitis frequency of 5.6/1000 workers. Paraphenylenediamine compounds were the main cause of allergic contact dermatitis and solvents the main cause of toxic contact dermatitis.

We have reviewed 275 patients who were tested in the light testing clinic in the 10 years from 1972 to 1981. 151 patients (55%) were referred with eczematous changes of the skin attributed to light, while 76 (28%) had a history of polymorphic light eruption. Light tests gave abnormal results in 54(36%) of the dermatitis group, showing a photoallergy in 17 patients and UV sensitivity with or without sensitivity to visible light in 30 patients. 7 out of 10 cases with clinical reactions to phenothiazines also had abnormal test results.Patients with polymorphic light eruption reacted normally in our test system. Abnormal tests were obtained in solar urticaria, in a few cases of non‐eczematous phototoxic reaction, folliculitis of the acne type and systemic lupus crythematosus.Additional patch tests with standard allergens revealed a high % of contact sensitivity in the 30 UV sensitive patient

The cross reaction pattern of acrylic monomers was investigated in 20 groups of animals sensitized to a different acrylic monomer.Aminals sensitized to one monoacrylated tend to react to other monoacrylates. Reactions to a corresponding monomethacrylates (same alcohol group in the ester) or other monomethacrylates did not occur. Some reactions to di(meth)acrylates were observed.A number of animals sensitized to one monomethacrylated to some other monomethacrylates and to monoacrylates. Reactions to di(meth)acrylates were observed.Animals sensitized to di(meth)acrylates showed hardly any positive cross reaction.A universal screening allergen to detected acrylic monomer sensitizations does not exist. The composition of (industrial) products should be made accessible to the occupational dermatologist in order to prevent the undresirable situation in which a patient suspected of having an acrylic monomer sensitization must be tested with a large series of potent allergens in order to detect the real origin of the sensitization.

4 patients with chronic photocontact dermatitis were sensitive to cobalt salts. They presented as cases of contact dermatitis from cement or pig fodder with persistent lesions on exposed areas. The results of patch testing in 200 patients in Toronto. Canada are presented, revealing that sensitivity to metal, rubber and cosmetic components account for the majority of positive epicutaneous reactions. Differences in the incidence of positive reactions between these patients and others reported elsewhere are discussed.

During a period of 2 1/2 years, 7 of 2000 patients routinely tested at our laboratory revealed contact allergy to oak moss in perfumes. All reacted to a mixture of different lichens and to some specific lichen compounds. The sensitivity was probably induced by cosmetics containing lichen substances, The following 3 compounds caused reactions in all patients tested atranorin, evernic and usnie acids, 3 of the patients and complete protection against light, rather than by irradiation alone. The data suggest that the sensitizing capacity of the lichen compounds is primarily of a contact rather than of photocontact nature.

It is desirable to use more objective methods than visual storing for the assessment of skin irritancy reactions. In the present study the blood flow in skin sites exposed to sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) was recorded by a laser Doppler flowmeter. The irritant was applied to the volar forearm of healthy volunteers in concentrations ranginig from 0.001% to 5% under occlusion for 24 h. The test sites were scored visually and the blood flow was recorded at 3 different times: 26 h, 48 h and 72 h after the application of SLS. Approximately 950 recording were performed and a clear relationship was observed the applied doses of SLS, the recorded blood flow values and the corresponding scores. In a few cases a deviation from the general trend was observed, implying that the naked eye might be unreliable for the assessment of skin irritancy reactions.

Many Composite weeds, vegetables and ornamental plants have been introduced to Australia Since European settlement began in 1788. The present distribution of 4 weeds known to cause contact dermatitis is recorded tin maps, and a short history of each is given. The relatively slow spread of these weeds is contrasted with the rapid spread ofParthenium hysterophoruswhich caused epidemic contact dermatitis in India and which has recently caused dermatitis in Northern Australia. Australian native Composite plants may play Mime part in the perpetuation of contact dermatitis initiated by weeds introduced into Australia.
