960 schoolgirls of ages 8, 11 and 15 years were investigated regarding the frequency of ear piercing and the prevalence of nickel and cobalt allergy. 72% had had their ears pierced. The prevalence of nickel allergy in the whole material was 9%, among girls with pierced ears 13% and among those without pierced ears 1%. The results show that the prevalence of nickel allergy is just as high among schoolgirls as among adult women. There is a clear relationship between ear piercing and induction of nickel allergy. Prophylactic measures to reduce the prevalence of nickel allergy should be directed against this risk factor.

A prospective study was made in 85 patients of the relationship between implantation of metal‐to‐polyethylene hip prostheses and the incidence of delayed‐type allergy to components of the prostheses. Madecassol is an extract of Centella asiatica, a member of the Umbelliferae family. It contains madecassic acid, asiatic acid and asiaticoside. It has been used as a wound healing agent and for the prevention of cicatrization. We report contact dermatitis due to Madecassol and a control study with its individual ingredients.

In a single blind cross‐over study, the skin compatibility and comfort of cotton inner gloves were compared with a special astringent cream in 64 car painters. 38/64 (33%) painters preferred cream under disposable polyethylene gloves, while 20/64 (33%) preferred cotton gloves under polyethylene gloves. This difference was not statistically significant. Persons with a tendency hyperidrosis under gloves tended to prefer cotton inner gloves. According to preference, a special astringent cream may be a suitable alternative to cotton inner gloves. Such creams should not contain sensitizing component

A selected group of 142 hospital “wet” workers with hand eczema was studied. 91% were female. Atopy (58%), metal dermatitis (41%), and hand eczema prior to the current wet work (67%) were more common than in the total cohort to which these patients belonged. Patch tests were carried out on 120 patients and prick tests on 41 with a history of contact urticaria.Water, cleaning agents, hand disinfectants, the wearing of gloves and other trivial irritant factors were claimed to have elicited the current episodes of hand eczema in 92.3% of cases. In 35%, a considerable part of the exposure to irritant factors look place at home or during leisure time. Delayed contact sensitivity was found in 45 patients, nickel, cobalt, balsam of Peru and rubber chemicals being the most common allergens. Nickel and/or cobalt allergy was found in approximately half of the patients with contact allergy. Positive prick tests relevant for contact urticaria were found in 22 patients, and were most often obtained with various foods or rubber gloves.Although contact sensitivity and contact urticaria were common, they seemed to play a minor rôle in the etiology of the current hand eczema compared to endogenous factors and trivial irrit
