Groups of guinea pigs were sensitized with a 0.1% solution of dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) by the Draize intracutaneous method, The course of the induction process, the influence of the vehicles used and the extent to which the reactions are amenable to assessment according to objective criteria were examined. The sensitivity of the standardized Draize test was then compared with that of various other sensitization techniques, including:The intracutaneous test with adjuvant (optimization test)The maximization test according to Magnusson&Kligman (1969)The epidermal sensitization testThe epidermal sensitization lest wish prior irritation of the contact site (by croton oil or sodium lauryl sulphate).Comparison of these methods revealed that either the additional application of adjuvant or prior irritation of the contact site augmented the degree of sensitization to DNCR just as greatly as the simultaneous use of adjuvant and prior irritation of the skin, (maximization test.). The improved sensitization methods, and in particular the standardised optimization test, may prove to be of particular value for the study of so‐called weak allergen

Twenty subjects with allergic contact dermatitis were patch tested with the responsible allergen appliedtofour fixed points on the back. Skin biopsies of the four sites were obtained after 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours, fixed in neutral formalin and twined with hematoxylin‐eosin, Giemsa and toluidine hint. Sections were examined and lymphomonocytes, mast cells, eosinophils and basophils counted. In all cases the infiltrate consisted mainly of lymphomonocytes (80–82 %); mast cells (5 %) and basophils (0.2 %) do not present clear variations within the given time. The release of nickel to boiling water from new and used saucepans of different material was measured. No nickel was released from aluminium, teflon and enamel. Certain amounts of nickel were released from stainless steel, but only al acid pH.

A patient with contact urticaria with skin and respiratory symptoms was found to be sensitive to both sorbic acid and synthetic oil of cassia. The contact urticaria was only elicitable on intact skin of the face by open testing. The source of the patient's contactants was her shampoo and toothpaste.

Increased internal exposure to nickel can cause an exacerbation of nickel contact dermatitis. Nickel ions are chelated by diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) and thereby inactivated. An oral dose of about 1 g DDC/day was given to a patient. The nickel excretion in the urine increased about tenfold; the nickel elimination in scalp hair did not increase. The slightly negative nickel balance did not exhaust the nickel content of the organs appreciably with a dose of 1.2 g DDC/day for 2 months. At the end of this experiment patch tests with nickel sulphate were still positive though less local therapy was needed, and the cross correlation between the activity of the eczema and the nickel concentration in the urine had lost its former periodicity. It is therefore not yet possible to conclude whether or not DDC may be really of help in the very nickel hypersensitive patient by reducing the exposure to nickel originating in food and other environmental sources.

Two outbreaks of hand dermatitis in light engineering works are reported. In both cases a number of workers shown to be allergic to soluble coolant oils were found to be allergic to ethylenediamine, which had either been incorporated into the oil or had been addedto it later.
