摘要:
For a given population of atoms in any atom-reservoir of low background, the sensitivity of atomic fluorescence measurements is inherently greater than that of atomic absorption because of the benefits which accrue from signal amplification and from the proportional relationship which exists between signal strength and the intensity of the source of excitation in fluorescence studies.

Molecular orbital calculations in the well-known CNDO/2 approximation [1–5] have been carried out for a number of polyatomic molecules, with generally good agreement for bond lengths, bond angles, bending force constants and dipole moments, but the original parametrization has not given satisfactory energy results. I have enjoyed reading the remarks by Macomber and Rosenthal concerning the mode of operation of the crossed-coil/nuclear magnetic resonance (N.M.R.) spectrometer. I find little to quarrel with in the paper and subsequent discussion. I believe that both Macomber and Rosenthal are right. There appears to be a good deal of misunderstanding concerning the role of quantum effects in N.M.R. The difficulty is that there are several more or less equivalent physical pictures of the N.M.R. process, most of which are only approximately correct, but all of which are adequate. But it is only human to view a familiar physical picture as the only correct one.

The crystal structure of Hg2F2was studied in works.1,2The Hg2F2elementary cell of the tetragonal syngony with a=3.66 Å and c=10.89 Å contains two formula units, the space-group being 14/mmm. Hg2F2belongs to those types of structures which possess one non-fixed coordinate (zFand zHg); hence, the position of the fluorine nuclei may be determined from the value of the second moment of the NMR spectrum of19F for powder sample.3In this case it is ostensibly important, inasmuch as determining the positions of fluorine nuclei near the heavy mercury atoms presents a difficulty for X-ray analysis.

Ultraviolet light has been generated from a Rhodamine 60 organic dye laser by frequency doubling with a KDP crystal. The second harmonic was tuned from 2900Å to 3000Å with peak powers of 40 watts.
