IR spectra of water in 1:1 complexes (HOH…B) show a characteristic change of the vibration frequencies v1, v2and v3for differently strong bases (B). The normal vibrations in different complexes are calculated from the frequencies and the force constants fOH, fα, fOH,OH.The normal vibrations show that v3(1:1) becomes the “free” and v1(1:1) the “bonded” OH vibration. The degree of coupling in these systems can be deduced directly from the observed band separation. For a base like water the degree of coupling in 1:1 complexes is about 40%.

Vibrational structure and intensity of the electronic absorption spectrum of tetralin vapour are reported. It is pointed out that the molecule is probably strained and consideration of G-π conjugation may be important in explaining the spectral features.

We have been interested for some time in the study of the hydrogen bonded complexes in the far-infrared region with special attention to the adducts between phenol and pyridine-N-oxides (1). In such systems the intermolecular mode vσ was identified and some intramolecular vibrations related to the N-O group were observed to be remarkably shifted consequent on hydrogen bonding. In this context we wished to obtain a force field for the complex which could fit the observational results. Unfortunately for one of the constituents i. e. pyridine-N-oxide a force field, suitable for our purposes, was not available and therefore preliminarily we determined it. We report here the results of such analysis.

The force constants of S2O have been calculated smploying GVFF and UBFF models. The reliability of the set of force constants have been examined. The mean amplitudes of vibration have also been evaluated at three temperatures, viz., 0°K, 298·15°K and 500°K. The results have been briefly discussed. The mean amplitude values will be helpful in interpretation of the electron diffraction data whenever available.

In polar, nonhydrogen-bonding solvents, cocaine's phosphorescence differs from that of its model compound, methyl benzoate, in what can be attributed to an amine-benzoate charge transfer interaction and both compounds exhibit long wavelength bands not present in nonpolar media.

Infrared spectra of whewellite (calcium oxalate monohydrate) have been recorded at 300 and 90°K in the 4000–2000 cm−1range in order to investigate the factors determining the band breadth and structure. On the basis of the HOD and bending D2O fundamentals details of the whewellite crystal structure concerning the symmetry of water molecules and the strength and symmetry of the hydrogen bonds are also discussed.

A comparison between the constancy and reproducibility of the hollow cathode, glow discharge and spark light sources was carried out. Samples of pure copper as well as of commercial brass and steel were investigated. Results show that the hollow cathode produces a better reproducibility of the measurements in all the cases examined.
