It has become increasingly evident in recent years that the toxicity of a metal is dependent not only on its concentration but also on its particular chemical form. The chemical form of an element determines metabolic effects and therefore its toxicity. Speciation of heavy metals may also influence the synergistic effects of groups of elements in the biospheres1.

The infrared spectra of CH3OH···O(CH3)2, CH3OD···O(CH3)2, C2H5OH···O(C2H5)2and C2H5OD···O(C2H5)2complexes trapped in argon matrices are reported. In dilute argon matrices the isolated 1:1 complexes of the type R2O···HOR and R2O···DOR were identified. The observed frequency shifts, Δν of the OH (OD) stretching vibrations show that the deuterium bonds are slightly stronger than the hydrogen bonds.

As a part of a continuing research program on the relationship between vibrational properties and molecular structure of-phenones(aceto- (1,2), and benzo- (3)) developed in this Laboratory, the results of i.r. measurements and assignments for a number of m-halogen benzophenones are presented here. The presence of rotational isomers has been deduced in the molecules examined and the observed features arising from their existence have been elucidated in the interpretation of the infrared spectra.

The discovery and investigation of exciplex luminescence in the polyatomic molecule vapors1-4is of great importance for better understanding of the relaxation mechanisms in bimolecular complexes formed due to the charge transfer between photo-excited organic molecules and other type of molecules in the ground state. The study of the vapor-phase exciplex emission from 9, 10-dicyanoanthracene in the presence of N, N-dimethylaniline (9, 10-DCA + DMA) showed4that the exciplex stabilities, their luminescence properties and the relative efficiency of monomer and exciplex luminescence essentially depend on the excess of the vibrational energy of excited 9, 10-DCA molecules.

The geminal tin-proton coupling constant,2J(SnCH), for Me4-nSnXnand Et4-nSnXnis found to correlate linearly with the product nα2ΔExwhere α2is the s-character of the hybrid tin orbital, ΔExthe Pauling's electronegativity difference between X and the tin atom, and n the number of halogen substituents. It is concluded that besides the s-character the effect of electronegativity is also important in determining the values of2J(SnCH).
