Rabbit alveolar macrophages were labeled with fatty acid-derived spin labels and the effects of both hydrostatic pressure and temperature upon the fluidity of cell lipids were observed. The alveolar macrophage membrane is significantly more fluid than the erythrocyte membrane, with a value of 2T of 52.1 ± 0.7 gauss as compared to a literature value of 56.2 ± 0.8 gauss for erythrocyte ghosts. Arrhenius plots of the effects of temperature upon membrane lipids exhibit a constant slope as the temperature is reduced until a temperature of 2–3°C is obtained, at which point an abrupt change of slope is encountered indicating a lipid phase transition. When the temperature is held constant and hydrostatic pressure is applied in increasing increments, membrane lipids again exhibit a gradual, consistent decrease in fluidity. Moderate pressures in the range of atmospheric to 4000 psi were employed; and for the cells studied, an increase in pressure of 1000 psi appears roughly equivalent to a temperature reduction of 1°C. When hydrostatic pressure is applied in combination with reduced temperature, the temperature at which the lipid phase transition takes place is shifted from 2–3°C to approximately 10°C.

Recently, Nakashima and Sousa have reported2a scheme for the generation of laser3pulses consisting of several wavelengths in the visible, which are rather widely separated spectrally, but ovelap spatially and temporally4. In their scheme (ref. 2), several cells-each containing a distinct dye solution - were placed in tandem and were pumped from one side with a focussed N2laser (337.1 nm) beam. Under these conditions each dye solution lased in its distinct wavelength and, by careful alighment of the dye cells, the emissions could be spatially superimosed to produce a single multi-wavelength laser pulse.

摘要:
The chemical shift of the NHprotons for a series of monomethyl-, dimethyl- and trimethyl- substituted 2- and 4- quinolones has been studied. Compounds with an 8-methyl substituent exhibit a characteristic upfield shift which is considered to be due to a reduction in hydrogen bonding as a result of steric effects. The application of this effect to the identification of alkyl substituted quinolones and some natural products is discussed.

In the hydrogen bonding of a protonic acid having more than one equivalent proton to an-donor, theK,δHandδSparameters can be measured by NMR spectrometry without any ambiguity as in the case of a single-proton acid, but the measured hydrogen-bond chemical shift is reduced in magnitude as it is the weighted average of the chemical shift of the bonded proton and that of the proton(s) remaining free in the dimer-complex.

摘要:
A great deal of spectroscopic work has been done in the last decade to study rare earths in different environments. Recently, crystals of NdF3and NdF3doped with hydrogen and deuterium have been studied1spectroscopically and, from the extra electronic lines appearing on the longer wave lenght side of the usual rare earth electronic transititions, the isotope shift have been calculated. Since no informations, regarding interelectronic repulsion, spin-orbit interaction, nephelauxetic effect, bonding, electronic energy states and nature of transitions involved, have yet been obtained, it was thought worthwile to carry out the present calculations.

Harmonic force fields for AlI3(in-plane) and Al2I6are developed from incomplete experimental assignments of vibrational frequencies and comparison with related molecules analysed previously. The missing frequencies are predicted from the calculations. Mean amplitudes of vibration are calculated.
