During the course of the structure elucidation of cheryl-line we have determined the absolute configuration at C-4 of various optically active 4-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroiso-quinolines by ORD/CD spectroscopy and by X-ray analysis of (S)-N-p-bromobenzoyl-4-p-methoxyphenyl-6, 7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline.1It was demonstrated that all 4(S)-compounds exhibit a negative first Cotton effect and their enantiomers a positive first Cotton effect in the 270–290 nm region,2corresponding to the UV maximum of the more substituted aromatic ring A (1Lb-transition).

The near ultraviolet absorption spectra of α-bromo- and β-chloronaphthalene have been photographed and analyzed. Both the molecules give rise to two systems of discrete absorption. In system I ofα-bromonaphthalene the analogues of both agand blg- type frequencies of naphthalene have been observed, the latter appearing more strongly than the former. In system II of the compound on the other hand, the analogues of ag-type vibrations are prominent in comparison to their counterparts in system I. In the case of β-enloronaphthalene, however, the analogues of ag-type frequencies are prominent as expected theoretically.

The successful generation of electronically excited states of many laser dyes by electrochemical means (ECL or electrogenerated chemiluminescence) led to experimental inquiries aimed at producing population inversion and laser action in these systems. The electrode is examined in this paper in terms of its adverse properties; among those discussed are reflectivity, quenching of ions and excited states, and acoustic disturbance patterns set up during the most commonly used pulsed ECL. This last problem is amenable to investigation by introducing electrodes into conventional optically pumped dye lasers, theoretically treated as a form of acousto-optic modulation.

In this letter we discuss the importance of interproton long-range coupling constant in proline and prolyl-derivatives, as a tool in the analysis of some complex NMR spectra of protons, as well as an aid in the conformational analysis of these compounds.

The matrix isolation of Li, Na, Ca, Mn and Ti atoms in matrices of cyclohexane at temperatures in the range 55 −130°K is shown to produce absorption spectra which correlate well with those of the free atom. These spectra are often found to be simpler than those of the same atoms isolated in the inert gases. The good isolation produced by cyclohexane may make this matrix useful for the study of high temperature reactions between matrix isolated species.

Infrared laser has been used to stimulate fluorescence of various molecules.1–15The technique is a potential method for the remote detection of atmospheric pollutants.16,17Ethylene which is one of the common pollutants found in air absorbs CO2, laser radiation at 10.6 μ strongly and fluoresces at its characteristic wavelengths. The fluorescence spectrum of ethylene in-duced by a CO2laser has been reported previously.18It is well know that vibrationally excited molecules transfer their vibrational energies to other molecules by collision.19–21Such collision would cause quenching of the expected fluorescence and lead to low analytical data.
