The Clean Air Act of 1967, and the Amendments to the Clean Air Act in 1970,(1)mandated a scheduled series of reductions in allowable ambient emissions from stationary and mobile sources of pollution. One pollutant singled out for immediate compliance was lead emissions from automobiles. Extensive research in our labs to determine actual concentrations of ambient lead, revealed unexpectedly high concentrations of non-filterable or “molecular” lead.(2)Although the concentrations of lead determined in particulates were in agreement with results obtained by conventional (EPA or ASTM) methods for air sampling, the non-filterable lead concentrations were higher and were observed to change rapidly during the day, occasionally by as much as an order of magnitude. In addition, very high values - up to 20 μg/m3- were occasionally observed. To account for these high concentrations, several studies were under-

The infrared spectrum of acetonitrile vapour has been obtained in the range below 100 cm−1. There is an absorption band located at 78 cm−1which is assigned to overlapping intermolecular vibrations of dimer molecules in equilibrium with the monomer species. The equilibrium constant calculated from the pressure dependence of the band intensity amounts to 42 ± 26 1·mol−1.

A novel laser intracavity method for detecting metal ions is described in which a metal analyte is added directly to a dye ligand and the dye laser emission is monitored as a measure of the analyte's concentration. The technique is both sensitive and selective and may have applications as an indirect probe of chemical analysis and of energy transfer.

Pyridine adsorption was used as a probe of the surface structure of supported molybdate and cobalt molybdate catalysts. The catalysts consisted of a γ-Al2O3support which had been impregnated with various molybdenum loadings ranging from 1.25% to 15% (MoO3). The Raman spectra of the catalyst and of the adsorbed pyridine indicated that a considerable portion of the alumina surface was not covered by molybdenum even after molybdenum trioxide was formed. The applicability of hollow cathode and glow discharge light sources to the determination of minor constituents in steel was tested in the case of copper (0.033 − 0.34[wt]%) and aluminium (0.015 − 0. 16%). The linearity of the calibration graphs, reflected by the Bravais-Pearson coefficient, was found to be slightly improved in all the cases investigated when operating with hollow cathode. Furthermore, results showed that blackening values of the analytical lines can be plotted directly without resorting to reference lines.

Franck-Condon factors and r-centroids of the bands of γ'-system of TiO have been calculated. The relative Einstein coefficients also have been evaluated. The probable occurrence of some more bands of the γ'-system has been discussed.
