Nutrient solution experiments were conducted in the growth chamber to study the influence of rootstock, solution Ca/Mg ratios and solution nickel on K uptake. The experimental plants were one‐year‐old prune trees: ‘French’ prune (Prunus domesticaL.) scions grafted on Myrobalan 29C (P.cerasiferaEhrh.), Marianna 2624 (P. cerasiferaxP.munsoniana?) or Nemaguard (P.persicaxP.davidiana) rootstocks. Ion uptake parameters Imax, Km, and Cmin were calculated from ion depletion measurements over a 6 to 10‐hr period.

Analysis of phloem and successive xylem rings from five trees (American beech, Bitternut hickory, Black locust, Red Oak, Sugar maple) for137Cs and40K by gamma‐ray spectrometry showed a positive correlation between the concentration of137Cs and the sapwood/heartwood boundary in the American beech. There was, however, no correlation between the advent of nuclear weapon testing and the concentration of137Cs in the xylem of any of the trees studied.

Two bush bean cultivars [Phaseolus vulgarisL. cv. ‘Wonder Crop 2’ (WC‐2) and ‘Green Lord’ (GL)], differing in Mn toxicity, were grown in a growth chamber for 12 days in Hoagland No. 2 nutrient solution containing 0.05 to 1 ppm Mn as MnCl24H2O with 1 ppm Fe as Fe‐EDTA, at an initial pH 5.00. Concentrations of Zn, K, Ca and Mg in the tissues of two bush bean cultivars were examined in relation to Mn toxicity.

Iron deficiency was induced in apple seedlings (Malus domesticaBorkh.) grown in solution culture. Severity of leaf chlorosis increased when seedlings were grown in nutrient solutions containing 0.13 ppm Fe at pH 6.5; no Fe at pH 5.5; no Fe at pH 6.5, and no Fe at pH 7.8. Seedlings grown in solutions containing 1.3 ppm Fe at pH 5.5 remained green. Iron deficiency reduced the amount of protoplasm present in the cells. Iron sufficient cells developed normal chloroplasts, containing numerous large starch granules. Leaf net photo synthetic (Pn) rate was 11.6 ug CO2/hr/dm2. Iron deficient plants grown in pH 5.5 solution developed abnormal chloroplasts with dispersed grana and osmosphilic bodies. The size and number of starch granules were reduced and leaf Pn rate was 3.7 mg CO2/hr/dm2. As the pH of the nutrient solution increased the degree of organization of the chloroplasts and the Pn rate decreased. No starch was found in chloroplasts from plants receiving no Fe and growing at pH 6.5 or 7.8. Iron deficiency at high pH usually has been assigned to both decreased Fe solubility and decreased uptake. In this experiment Fe deficiency has been shown to be aggrevated by increasing the nutrient solution pH even though Fe was not taken up.

Limpograss,Hermarthria altissima, (Poir) Stapf & C. E. Hubb (PI 364344) was tested for Al tolerance in acid, Al‐toxic Tatum subsoil (pH 4.1), in an acid mine spoil (pH 4.0) and in nutrient solutions containing 0 to 24 ppm Al added at initial pH 4.5 or 4.0. The grass was exceptionally tolerant to Al in all three media and can therefore be considered a “calcifuge”;, or perhaps more accurately, an “alumicole”;. In both Tatum soil and mine spoil, liming to pH values above 4.5 decreased growth, but the reasons for this were not determined. In our nutrient culture experiment (initial pH 4.0), the yields of plant tops were not significantly reduced by added Al concentrations up to 6 ppm but roots were injured by 4 ppm Al added. At initial pH 4.5 Al concentrations up to 4 ppm added appeared beneficial to root growth. Both tops and roots produced 50% of maximal yield with a final solution pH of 4.1 and with 17 ppm Al in the solution filtrate. Maximal growth was associated with plant‐induced pH increases to 7.0 or above, and with final Al concentrations below about 0.61 ppm in the solution filtrate.

Previous studies showed that limpograss,Hemarthria altissima(Poir), Stapf & C. E. Hubb (PI 364344) was tolerant to low temperature and to high concentrations of Al in acid soil, mine spoil and nutrient solution. Additional experiments were conducted to test the tolerance of this limpograss clone to excess Mn, another potential growth‐limiting factor in acid soils.

The present study was to assess the relationship between timing of fertilizer N applications and the contribution of that N to developing fruit and leaves. Nitrogen was applied as N‐depleted (NH4)2SO4to mature almond [Prunus dulcis(Mill.) D.A. Webb, cv. Nonpareil] trees in a comercial orchard. The kinetics of isotopic N accumulation by developing fruit and leaves permitted some discrimination between the 2 principal N pools: the N previously assimilated and stored within the trees, and the N newly absorbed from the soil. Less than 15% of fruit N was contributed by the N applied the previous year in March or June. Thus, despite the occurrence of an endogenous pool of previously assimilated N, the almond appeared to be highly dependent on the annual availability of N from the soil. This concept was supported by the occurrence of incipient N deficiency within 14 months of fertilizer N application, as evidenced by reduced fruit dry weight and total N/fruit. The occurrence of these deficiencies coincided closely in time with the cessation of isotopic N accumulation by developing fruit. These data presumably reflect the rate of N turnover in the almond, the limited N reserve in the coarse‐textured soil (Delhi sand) in which the trees were growing, and the heightened potential for N loss (presumably by leaching) associated with this coarsetextured soil.

Experiments were conducted to avaluate the K, Na, Ca, and P uptake by seedlings of two date palm (phoenix dactyliferaL.) cultivars, Khedhri and Sekkeri as well as the effect of gibberellin (GA3) treatment, Khedhri cultivar showed a typical hyperbolic curve of absorption of K,N, end low concentration of Ca (up to 5mM) but at higher Ca concentration, there seems to be another phase of absorption. Sekkeri cultivar exhibited similar but lower absorption rate of K and Ca while Na seems to be extruded at lower substrate concentration. The rate of P uptake by Sekkeri was irregular. Applied GA3slightly stimulate Na uptake by Sekkeri cultivar but at 10–4M GA3enhancement of both Ca and P accummulation in both cultivars was observed.
