Recent studies have indicated that A1 concentrations in excess of 1000 μg/g have occurred in grass species susceptible to Al toxicity, although other studies have suggested that high Al concentrations were the result of soil contamination. Our objectives were to determine the effect of Al source, Al level, nutrient solution pH, and tissue age on elemental concentrations in ryegrass.

Addition of paclobutrazol (PP333) at 0.2 ppm to a nutrient solution in which 11‐month‐old apple seedlings were growing reduced terminal growth, fresh weight increase (FWI), transpiration and Ca and K uptake per seedling. Total root surface area was not affected by PP333 treatment. Reduced Ca uptake preceded the reduction in transpiration and FWI. In the case of K these changes were parallel. This may indicate that different mechanisms were responsible for reduced Ca and K uptake in PP333‐treated plants. At the conclusion of the experiment control and treated plants were absorbing similar amounts of Ca per unit of FWI. At the same time the amount of K uptake per unit of FWI was significantly lower in treated than control plants.

In separate studies, rabbiteye blueberries (Vaccinium asheiReade) grown in sand culture were subjected to varying levels of P (10–27 mg/liter) and K (0–54 mg/liter) applied at rates of 250 ml/plant daily. Other essential elements were kept constant. Leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, B, Zn, Co, and Al were determined. Phosphorous concentration in the leaves increased linearly but that of Cu and Mn decreased linearly in response to increasing levels of P fertilization. Leaf concentrations of other elements were not influenced by P fertilization. Only K, Ca, Mn, and N responded to K fertilization. Concentrations of K and Ca in the leaves increased linearly with increased K fertilization. Leaf Mn‐content followed a quadratic relationship with K fertilization, increasing from 0 to 28 mg K/liter fertilization rates, then decreasing. High K fertilization produced a linear reduction in leaf N concentration. Increasing rate of P or K increased shoot dry weight. As leaf P decreased below 0.09% P, deficiency symptoms became more prevalent. Visual K deficiency symptoms became increasingly evident as leaf K content decreased below 0.35%.

Relatively insoluble sources of phosphorus (P) may require solubilization, and organic P (Po) may require hydrolysis to inorganic P (Pi) before P can be readily absorbed by plants roots. The mechanisms for these processes, however, are unknown. Root phosphatase (Pase) activity was measured to assess its relationships to P uptake by seven sorghum [Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench] genotypes grown with Po(ethylammonium phosphate, glycerophosphate, and phenylphosphate) and Pi(KH2PO4, calcium tribasic phosphate, calcium pyrophosphate, aluminum phosphate, and ferric phosphate) in nutrient solutions in a greenhouse.

Fluidized bed material (FBM, a coal/limestone combustion byproduct) was used as a lime substitute prior to establishment of a peach (Prunus persiaL.) orchard. Growth and nutrition of the trees were generally unaffected by applied FBM, either broadcasted or incorporated, at rates up to three times the soil lime requirement. Leaf and fruit Ca concentration were not significantly effected by FBM additions when compared to limestone or a fertilized control. Minor differences between treatments were noted for some elements. The applied FBM was found to be a suitable substitute for limestone in establishing a peach orchard from the aspects of tree nutrition and expected effects in the soil; elevated pH and higher extractable Ca status.

Examination of results from two experiments designed to compare copper (Cu) carriers, rates, and application methods and an experiment designed to test the residual effects of Cu on spring wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) pointed to the existence of an interaction between Cu and phosphorus (P). Mineral element data for aboveground whole‐plant samples from the three experiments indicated that, with low Cu levels in the soil, when Cu was applied as CUSO4in an apparently unavailable position, or when the Cu had been applied to the soil as CuHEDTA, P concentrations in the plant were very high. Also, when CUSO4was applied to the soil and incorporated to a depth of 60 to 100 mm, concentrations of Cu increased and P decreased in the plant. In each case, if Cu concentrations in the plant were adequate, then normal plant development occurred. A Cu‐P interaction which affected P uptake or translocation was evident.

The uptake of potassium from hydroponic solutions byTrifolium repensis reduced in the presence of NH4+. However, it appears that a concurrent effect of NH4+is to induce, via the plant, marked changes in pH which counters the effect of NH4+on K uptake. When the variation in measured mean K concentration changes (KCC) associated with the variation in pH change is removed by analysis of the data using pH as a covariate, an apparent increase in K removal from solution is observed in the presence of NH4+.

The distribution patterns of dry matter and P in field‐grown tomato ‘Campbell‐37’, ‘Knox’, and ‘Tipton’, (Lvcopersicon esculentummill), were determined from 25 days after emergence to harvest. Dry weight accumulation was about the same for the 3 cultivars up to 55 days after plant emergence. From 55 to 75 days, ‘Knox’ accumulated more total plant dry weight than either ‘Tipton’ or ‘Campbell‐37’, largely due to an accelerated fruit accumulation rate during this period. In the 75 to 105 day interval, dry weight accumulation by ‘Knox’ was less than ‘Campbell‐37’ or ‘Tipton’. Fruit accumulation, as indicated by fruit number increase, was during the 45 to 75 day period for ‘Knox’, the 55 to 75 day period for ‘Tipton’, and the 55 to 85 day period for ‘Campbell‐37’. ‘Knox’ and ‘Tipton’ had a faster fruit ripening rate than ‘Campbell‐37’. The total ripe fruit yields, for single and multiple harvests, were 36.7% and 28.6% respectively, higher in ‘Campbell‐37’ than in ‘Knox’. Phosphorus concentration of stem, leaf, and cluster tissues decreased over the season for the 3 cultivars. Phosphorus concentrations of leaves decreased from 0.49% to 0.16% as plant development progressed from seedling stage to ripe fruit harvest. Phosphorus in the vegetative portion of the tomato plant at final harvest represented only about 10% of the total P accumulated. The plant efficiency with respect to P accumulation decreased from an early stage of plant development as the relative growth rate of the plant declined.
