The aim of the study was to determine the influence of age on the location of the maxillary mucogíngíval junction. The material comprised orthopantomograms of 20 male and 20 female students aged 21–30 years and 20 male and 20 female adults aged 39–51 years. The mucogingival junction was revealed with Schiller's iodine solution and marked with short pieces of metal wire, attached to the teeth and gingivae with Squibb's Orahesive Dental Bandage in the midline of the facial surface of ech ototh. Orthopantomograms were taken to the marked dentitions with the X‐ray beam passing the horizontally positioned occlusal level at a –5° angle. From the radiographs the distance from the floor of the nasal cavity to the mucogingival junction was measured separately for each tooth to the nearest millimeter. The distance between the floor of the nasal cavity and the mucogingival junction was found to be the same in both age groups. Since thre is no reasons to believe that the floor of the nasal cavity would move downwards and certainly not upwards with advancing age, it was suggested that the mucogingival junction also remains at a constant location through

On basis of earlier results it seems justified to assume that the antomical width of the attached gingiva, i.e. the distance from the mucogingival junction to the cemento‐enamel junction in human type of teeth is in direct proportion to the amount of past tooth eruption. For experimental verification of this hypothesis a study was designed to assess the anatomical width of attached gingiva on supraerupted teeth in man. The material of the sutdy comprised 28 first and second maxillary mucogingival junction was marked with short pieces of metal wire, orthopantomograms were taken, and the distances from the mucongingival junction to the floor of the nasal cavity and to the cemento‐enamel junction used as controls. A comparision wa also made between the supraerupted teeth and previously measured normally occluding teeth. The results indicated that even during pronounced supraeruption the teeth tend to erupt with their investing tissues while the location of the mucogingival junction remains constant. Springs were applied to the mandibles of normal mice to produce intrusion of one first molar and extrusion of the opposite first molar. Treatments were randomly allocated to the right and left sides of the jaw. The experiment was repeated in lathyritic mice. Hostologic sections demonstrated that major oxytalan fibres underwent marked changes in their angle of attachment to the cementum when comparing an intruded tooth with its extruded counterpart in either normal or lathyritic animals. A sample of 10 angular readings was tken from each tooth. A mixed model analysis of variance showed a significant difference at the 1% level in the angle attributed to the type of treatment applied. The data lend support to the hypothesis that oxytalan fibres are capable of independent function within the normal and also the pathologically affected periodontal ligament of mice.

Collagenase that cleaves the native collagen molecule into two fragments was extracted from a homogenate of human gingiva obtained from subjects with periodontal disease. Collagenase activity was measured using radioactive type I collagen in solution as substrate and separating the reaction products by SDS acrylamide gel electrophoresis. Extraction of collagenase was performed with a neutral salt solution and the extract was fractionated using either ammonium sulfate or dioxane. Gel filtration was necessary for detection of collagenase activity in the extract. Considerable amounts of collagenase apparrently remained in the insoluble fraction of gingival homogenate bound to collagen fibers as indicated by digestion of gingival collagen during incubation at 36°C. Tissuebound collagenase was relased by heating the insoluble homogenate at 60° with calcium. Partial purification and characterization by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of human and rodent malate dehyrogenase revealed the presence of two distinct isoenzymes, one associated with the mitochondrial fraction (M‐MDH) and one with the soluble fraction (S‐MDH). Electrophoretic mobilities of the isoenzymes obtained from human and rodent gingiva wre similar.Malate dehyrogenase distribution patterns of the subcellular fractions suggest that the S‐MDH isoenzyme may be more active than the M‐MDH isoenzyme in rodent gingiva.Malate dehydrogenase distribution patterns in mild to moderately inflamed human gingiva were similar to those seen in dilantin hyperplastic gingiva. S‐MDH and M‐MDH isoenzyme distribution patterns could not be fully evaluated because of the high activity of the M‐MDH isoenzyme seen in the soluble fraction. However, the subcellular distribution patterns and electrophoretic mobility in human gingiva showed trends similar to those seen in rodent gingiva. Acid mucopolysaccharides (AMPS) were extracted from porcine gingiva. The concentration of the uronic acid extracted was 0.23% of the ry‐defatted issue. The AMPS were fractioned with a Dowex 1‐X2 column.The individual AMPS components of the various fractions obtained were determine on the basis of the contents of the hexosamine, unsaturated disaccharides, and chondroitin sulfate isomers. The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the ability of antigens of human dental plaque microorganisms to stimulate peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from humans during the development and recovery from experimental gingivitis.Eleven healthy dental students (22–36 years) participated in the study. At the start of the experiment, they exhibited clean teeth and clinically healthy gingivae. They then abstained from all oral hygiene measures for four weeks according to the model proposed by Löe et al. (1965). At the start, after 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks of abolished oral hygience and 2 weeks following reinstitution of oral hygiene, the oral conditions were assessed, using the critieria of the Plaque Index system (Löe&Silness 1964) and the Gingival Index system (Löe&Silness (1963).At each examination triplicate microcultures, each containing 2 × 105 viable PBL in .2 ml TC 199 with glutamine and antibiotics containing 10% fetal calf serum, were stimulated with four concentrations of sonicates fromV. alcalescens, F. nucleatum, B. melaninogenicus, A. viscosus, A. naeslundii, S. sanguisand pooled dental plaque all obtained from the previsouly performed experimental gingivitis. The cultures were incubated for 78 hours at 37°C in 5% CO2. 3H‐thymidine was added for the final 8 hours.OnlyA. viscosuswas able to stimulate PBL to undergo blastogenesis during the development of experimental gingivitis.A. viscosusstimulated the PBL of 3 subjects after one week but all subjects after 2 weeks of abolished oral hygiene. The stimulation indices (SI) remained>2.5 for the rest of the experimental period. Following 2 weeks of reinstituted oral hygiene, the SI reached preexperimental levels.These results suggest thatA. visocusis capable of inducing a specific cellular immune response during the development of experimental gingivitis and may be important as a causative plaque constituent. Established chronic gingival lessions were studies in four categories of patients. One groups of healthy subjects was kept plaque‐free (CO), while in the second group (CP) moderate accumulations of dental plaque were permitted. The third group (UH) comprised patients with uremia and in hemodialysis. A fourth group (IS) had received renal allografts and was kept on an immunosuppressive regimen. Differential blood counts and serum immunoglobin quantitation from the UH and IS groups gave mean values within normal ranges. Gingival biopsies were obtained from each subject. The connective tissue inflammation (CTI) scores were compared between the groups. Despite abundant local plaque accumulations, the UH group displayed essentially the same CTI scroes as plaque‐free controls (CO), while the IS group showed a significantly lower (p<0.05) CTI score than the two in question. The CTI scores of the CP group (controls with plaque) were significantly higher (P<0.01) than those of the UH, IS and CO groups. In advanced cases of human periodontitis with pocket depths over 4 mm, severe tooth mobility and bone loss involving approximately two‐thirds of the alvelor height as assessed radiographyically, numerous Gram negative and Gram postitive filamentous, rodshaped, and coccoid bacteria were seen inflitrating the periodontal ligament, coming into close contact with the alveolar bone surface and even invading superfical osteocyte lacunae. Typical bone resporption occured along the bacterial front. This was characterized by a scattered dissolution of individual apatite crystals denuding corssstriated collagen fibrils which were finally destroyed. In the vicinity of such areas, two types of calculus formation were observed in the ligament. Calcification occurred at the surface and between the microorganisms with entrapped bacterial remnants. The second type of calcification developed on cellular remnants. Polyethylene tubes filled with various dental materials were placed as subcutaneous implants in rats. A scoring system for no, slight, moderate and severe reaction was established on the basis of the tissue response to a variety of materials for the evaluation of long term implants (30 or 90 days). Short term implants (7 or 14 days) were evaluated by deciding whether or not an effect from the material could be found in addition to the operative trauma.The scoring system was used to evaluate the reactions to three periodontal dressings. Tissue from the short term implantation periods exhibited marked reactions to most implants. Long term implantation revealed that a difference in the tissue response to the three dressings was present, For two of the materials the initial irritation was followed by an innocuous state, but from the third dressing a continuous irritation of the tissue was observed.
