Over 50 identifications of Tertiary pollen are reviewed. The pollen assemblages indicate rain-forest through most of the Tertiary, but the requisites for pollen preservation are biased towards the wetter climates.

Markings on the shell interior of fossil palaeotaxodonts may indicate the position of the gonad and the gills, while umbonal muscle scars probably mark the attachment points of the muscular floor of the visceral cavity. A comparison of Ordovician to Recent nuculoids indicates a progressive change in the pattern of the umbonal scars, which may reflect the evolutionary development of the muscular visceral floor. Although the present form of the visceral floor does not seem to have developed in the nuculoids until the Triassic, it was well established in the nuculanids by the Devonian.

In the Silurian-Devonian marine clastic strata of the Yea District, central Victoria, two distinct flora and faunal assemblages containing elements of theBaragwanathiaflora occur separated stratigraphically by 1700m of siltstone. The upper assemblage is Early Devonian (Praguian) in age, whilst the lower assemblage is considered to be Late Silurian (Ludlow).

Species of Late Carboniferous spiriferidines belonging to the generaAlispirifer, Licharewia, Neospirifer, Spirifer, Liriplica, andSpinuliplicaare analyzed on the basis of fifty-two different morphological characters. A computer program for cluster analysis is used which ensures that each character is given equal weighting, and the degrees of similarity between species are measured objectively.

摘要:
The type species ofMyloceras, M. ammonoides(Etheridge 1909), previously known only from incomplete phragmocones, is redescribed on the basis of two complete specimens from the Albian Allaru Mudstone, Eromanga Basin, central Queensland. These specimens, and the holotype of a new species,M. auritulum, represent the first descriptions and illustrations of complete specimens ofMylocerasfrom Australia. They shed light on the variation in shell morphology between the phragmocone and body chamber inMylocerasand between Australian and southern African species.

摘要:
Palaeontological interest relating to Australia began with recognition of ‘living fossils’ among material taken to Paris in 1804 and continued in desultory fashion as fossils gathered by explorers came to notice. The first serious studies of stratified rocks in the field and local work on fossils during the 1840s mark the start of a pioneering stage. Dominated by European thought and opinion, it survived establishment of geological surveys and universities in the 1850s until 1875 and the arrival of Ralph Tate in Adelaide. He and Robert Etheridge, Jun., are seen as the first real leaders of an Australian palaeontology.
