A sequence of Campanian dinoflagellates recorded from the exploration well Pisces-1 in the Gippsland Basin is compared with material recovered from two dredge samples from the continental slope of the same region. The Campanian sequence from Pisces-1 is the most complete so far examined from the basin, and it provides a reference for local correlations. Assemblages studied are assigned to theIsabelidinium korojonenseZone (Helbyet al., 1987) and a new biounit named theSatyrodinium haumurienseZone. Five new species are described:Canningia bassensissp. nov.,Gillinia pyriformissp. nov.,Senoniasphaera edenensissp. nov.,Chatangiella packhamiisp. nov., andIsabelidinium greenensesp. nov.

Two new species ofClimacograptusare described from the late Gisbornian and early Eastonian (Late Ordovician) of Victoria. It is proposed that they form a lineage which can be traced fromC. bicornis tridentatusLapworth, viaC. cruciformissp. nov. andC. lanceolatussp. nov., toC. spiniferusRuedemann. A newly recognised structure, the parasicula, is described.

Twelve species of brachiopods belonging to five families are described from the oldest Late Palaeozoic (Tamarian; Late Carboniferous-Early Permian) faunas of Tasmania. Taxa include species assigned to the generaGrumantia, Strophalosia, Licharewiella, Trigonotreta, Sulciplica, TomiopsisandPseudosyrinx. A new ingelarellid taxonKelsoviagen. nov. with type speciesKelsovia superbasp. nov. is introduced together with the new speciesGrumantia costellata, Strophalosia concentrica, Sulciplica crassaandSulciplica subglobosa. The brachiopods form part of a larger fauna, mostly molluscan, which is listed but not described. Correlation of the fauna with those elsewhere in eastern Australia and beyond is briefly discussed. The Tasmanian faunas are important as they represent the best preserved, most abundant and most diverse suite of brachiopod assemblages within the older parts of the characteristic Gondwanan cold-waterEurydesmafauna anywhere in eastern Australia and probably the world.

The morphology ofCanninginopsisCookson & Eisenack 1962 has been re-assessed through examination of the type species,C. denticulataCookson & Eisenack 1962, from the Mid Cretaceous of the Perth Basin, andC. bretonicasp. nov. from the Late Cretaceous of the Perth and Gippsland Basins. The genus now includes forms with a greater variation in the ventrodorsal outline of the autocyst, surface sculpture, and distribution and morphology of characters marking the paratabulation. The widespread distribution of taxa within the genus combined with their distinctive morphologies and restricted stratigraphic ranges make them important index species in the Australian Cretaceous.
