Twenty instances of verruca vulgaris, equally divided between oral mucosa and lip vermillion, were assayed for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) capsid antigen and type‐specific DNA employing in situ hybridization methods. All 10 cases arising on lip vermilion expressed capsid antigen and harbored HPV Type 2 genomes as assessed under conditions of high stringency DNA hybridization. Oral verrucae rarely expressed capsid antigen; HPV Type 2 genomes were encountered in 20% of the case

Etoposide (VP‐16) is a semisynthetic podophyllotoxin derivative that is active against a number of solid and hematologic malignancies. Previously reported cutaneous complications include Stevens‐Johnson syndrome and radiation recall. We report 4 cases of cutaneous eruptions with distinctive histopathologic changes following etoposide therapy. Diffuse erythematous macules and papules developed 5–9 days after initiation of etoposide therapy and resolved spontaneously within 3 weeks. Histologic examination revealed epidermal maturation disturbances with scattered markedly enlarged individual keratinocytes. These cells had pale cytoplasms and fragmented, haphazardly dispersed nuclear chromatin in a starburst pattern (“starburst cells”). Many keratinocytes showed notable nuclear enlargement with multiple prominent nucleoli. In addition, numerous dyskeratotic cells and basilar mitotic figures in metaphase were present. Some of these changes have been described in condylomata acuminata treated with topical applications of podophyllin, a compound structurally related to etoposide. Starburst cells have not been reported in cutaneous eruptions produced by other chemotherapeutic agents. These cells may represent abnormal mitotic arrest secondary to podophyllin and its related

摘要:
In this work the role of trypsin in revealing epidermal cell surface antigens, with the use of immunological markers, was investigated. Two monoclonal antibodies (MCA) were used, the first: D47, belongs to the first cluster of differentiation and recognizes a. membrane antigen of human thymocytes; the second HLA‐ABC‐m3, is an anti‐HLA‐B27 MCA. Preliminary treatment with various concentrations of trypsin was performed on frozen skin sections and followed by indirect immunofiuorescence. D47 reacted with epidermal dentritic cells only after trypsin pre‐treatment of skin sections. In addition a mild preliminary trypsinization was shown to increasein situimmunoreactivity of MCA HLA‐ABC‐m3 with epidermal cells. Best results were obtained when trypsin concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 5 μg/ml were applied for 10 min at 37°C. Immunohistochemical distribution of human epidermal growth factor (hEGF) was described in 17 cases of mixed tumour of the skin with monoclonal antibody. In normal sweat glands, epithelial cells in the secretory portion and in the transitional area between secretory portion and duct showed prominent staining for hEGF. In the salivary pleomorphic adenoma type of mixed tumour of the skin, luminal tumour cells of tubular and duct‐like structures gave a very characteristic hEGF staining reaction. The tumour cells showing strong staining for hEGF were scattered throughout the solid foci in this type of mixed tumour. Tubular epithelial cells in the clear cell adenoma type also displayed a positive hEGF reaction. And apocrine mixed tumours strong staining for hEGF occurred on the apical side of tubular and ductal tumour cells.
