The occurrence, location and intensity of the basement membrane (BM) components collagen IV and laminin in benign and malignant pigment cell tumors was studied by immimohistochemical methods. The results seemed to establish the following findings: junctional nevi display varying continuity of BM; nevus cells in the dermis display more continuous and thicker 13M superficially (associated with epithelial type nevus cells); superficial spreading melanoma displays discontinuity of BM, and nodular melanoma and metastatic melanoma display variable BM around tumor aggregates. The variable expression of BM components in this study showed an apparent relationship to tumor cell type and laminin and collagen IV production, partly related to clinical behaviour.

Using immunoperoxidase methods, normal sweat glands, 44 benign and 4 malignant sweat gland tumors were tested for the presence of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), pregnancy‐specific‐B1‐glycoprotein (SPI) and actin (ACT). CEA and SP1 stained the secretory and duct‐lining cells of normal eccrine glands. Among benign tumors, 74% were positive for CEA and 44% for SPI. The staining reaction was found mainly in luminal secretions and surrounding cells. Staining by SPI was reduced, but not suppressed, after absorption with the purified antigen. ACT was found in myoepithelial cells of the secretory tract of normal glands and in basal cells of all cases of hidradenoma papilliferum. Only 3 sweat gland carcinomas reacted for CEA. In a malignant chondroid syringoma, no ACT‐positive cells were seen in the myxochondroid stroma. The potential value of CEA, SP1 and ACT in the diagnosis of sweat gland tumors is

We performed studies on the lectin‐binding pattern in epithelial tumor cell components of 4 cases of mixed tumor of the skin developing on the face in addition to identification of keratin and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), compared with those of normal sweat glands. Normal eccrine glands showed specific labelling withDolichos biflorusagglutinin (DBA) and soybean agglutinin (SBA), whereas none of the studied lectins reacted specifically with normal apocrine glands. In mixed tumors the dark cells, which form the inner layer of the tubuloalveolar and ductal structure, showed the presence of keratin and CEA, as well as of specific sugar structures that bind to DBA and SBA. On the other hand the light cells that form the outer layer of the tubular structures or the solid epithelial cell nests gave only a faint to moderate staining of keratin, and no staining of CEA or lectins. It is probable that the inner dark cells differentiate toward the cells that have the same sugar structures on the cell surface as those of the normal eccrine gland cells, while the outer light cells appear to be immature or in a less differentiated stat

The microscopic appearance of eruptive xanthoma (EX) presents the potential for misinterpretation as granuloma annulare (GA). Both exhibit one or multiple lesions in the superficial reticular dermis. Both have a perivascular and interstitial inflammatory cell infiltrate. Extracellular lipid in EX separates and disrupts the reticular dermis, simulating necrobiosis. There are several useful differential diagnostic features. The perivascular infiltrate is histiocytic in EX and lymphoid in GA. The histiocytes of EX have translucent, finely stippled cytoplasm, whereas those of GA have denser eosinophilic cytoplasm. EX lacks a distinctly granulomatous appearance, whereas epithelioid and multinuclear cells arc typical of GA. The semilucent extracellular deposits of lipid in EX are associated with only minimal fragmentation of collagen and no evidence of cellular necrosis. Necrobiotic material stains more deeply eosinophilic or basophilic; degradation of collagen is discern‐able, and there is often evidence of cell death. Both EX and GA exhibit deposits of hyaluronic acid. They tend to be concentrated at the borders of lesions in EX and in the centers of lesions in GA. Elastolysis was not appreciated in EX. This work is concerned with the morphometric analysis of 19 subcutaneous hemangiomas of capillary and cavernous types, to investigate their evolution. Lymphoid nodules were found associated with 44 of 1,506 dermatofibroma/histiocytoma tumors of the skin. The lymphoid nodules were usually in the adjacent fat. Germinal center formation occurred, and perinodular and perivascular plasmacylosis was frequently associated.

Plastic chambers were glued to the dorsal skin of rats and were sealed after being filled with cither distilled water, saline, an aqueous antibiotic mixture or aqueous chlorhexidine. The chambers were inspected at 24 h intervals and replenished. Groups of rats were killed at 24, 48 and 72 h; the chamber removed and the underlying skin excised and examined by light microscopy. The degree of dermatitis was assessed by means of an index of inflammation derived by scoring epidermal and dermal markers of inflammation. The results indicate that the antibiotic solution produced significantly less dermatitis compared with other treatments at each lime interval studied. In general, epidermal ballooning and vesiculation occurred initially in the basal and prickle cells, but by 72 h the damaged cells were often replaced by intact keratinocytes, even though the skin was still immersed. Epidermal hyperplasia, as manifested by acanthosis and hyperkeratosis, was frequently present at 72 h.

We report a patient who developed a proliferating trichilemmal cyst on his shin. Histological examination revealed the typical features of this lesion. Proliferating trichilemmal cysts characteristically occur on the scalp and occasionally on the upper trunk. We describe the first example of this uncommon condition on the leg.
