Histochemical findings of cutaneous apoptosis are reviewed with special reference to the sulphhydryl groups. Using stain techniques with the new fluorescent thiol reagent, N‐(7–dimethylamino‐4–methylcoumarinyl) maleimide (DACM), it was shown that sulphhydryl crosslinking occurs in colloid bodies and sunburn cells and also participates, at least in part, in amyloid formation. As the DACM staining clearly demonstrated the localization of sulphhydryl and disulphide groups in the epidermis, this technique can be of help dealing with the problem of the origin of cutaneous apoptotic

One hundred twenty skin biopsies from patients with different skin diseases were found to be positive for C3 cutaneous staining by immunofluorescence study. By the direct immunofluorescence method, we looked for C1q and C4 and immunoglobulin deposits in all those biopsies. C1q and/or C4 were only found in dermatoses with a recognised humoral immunologic mechanism; in some eases C1q and/or C4 deposits were found in the absence of immunoglobulins. The results showed that identification of C1q and C4 is important in routine immunopathologic studies, and provide interesting data of diagnostic value.

High patients with psoriasis (pustular, erythrodermic or severe plaque type) were treated sucessfully with retinoid (Ro 10‐9359) or with retinoid followed by PUVA (RePUVA). The histological changes in recovering skin were examined during 14 weeks. Treatment resulted in normalization of keratinocyte differentiation with fine structural changes suggesting decreased metabolic activity and a reduction of mitoses. There was an increase in the number of keratohyalin granules and of tonofilaments and desmosomes and a decrease in leukocytes in the epidermis. The different cell organelles were studied in detail, but the exact mechanism of retinoid action remains unsolved.
