Ultrastructural and histological investigations were performed on a case of generalized melanosis associated with superficial spreading melanoma. The hyperpigmentation of the general body surface, mucous membranes and nail beds was associated with deposition of melanin in macro‐phages in the dermis, together with some hyperactivity of epidermal melanocytes. Melanin granules were observed lying free in the stroma, suggesting pigment incontinence and phagocytosis by macrophages. Giant melanosomes were noted in melanocytes, keratinocytes and melanophages in the hyperpigmented skin. No evidence was found to suggest dissemination of individual malignant cells throughout the skin. A significant statistical difference was found between the incidence of intraepithelial elastic fibers in keratoacanthoma and squamous cell carcinoma arising in actinic keratosis (P<0.001). There was no significant difference when keratoacanthoma was compared to adenoid squamous cell carcinoma (P=0.13) andde novosquamous cell carcinoma (P=0.73). However, in keratoacanthoma intraepithelial elastic fibers were found in areas of pseudoepitheliomatous hyper‐plasia and in the central keratin plug, as well as in areas of infiltrating, peripheral keratinocytes. In adenoid squamous cell carcinoma andde novosquamous cell carcinoma, the intraepithelial elastic fibers were found only in areas of atypical epithelial cells at the margin of the neoplasm. Intracytoplasmic glycogen was found to be statistically more abundant in keratoacanthoma than in squamous cell carcinoma arising in actinic keratosis (P<0.001), adenoid squamous cell carcinoma (P<0.001), and inde novosquamous cell carcinoma (P<0.001

Histological examination of 42 early lesions of molluscum contagiosum was performed. At the top of the molluscum papule, the epidermis cylindrically hung down into the dermis, thus forming an epidermal cylinder with a narrow canal. Acanthomatous change occurred at the bottom of the epidermal cylinder. Thirteen of the 42 molluscum lesions showed a direct connection with components of hair follicle. It is suggested that the central pitting of molluscum contagiosum may be the ostium of pilar infundibulum.

Individual epidermal cells with condensed pyknotic nuclei surrounded by a clear vesicular space and a rim of homogeneous cytoplasm were observed in various unrelated skin conditions. It is suggested that the appearance of these cells is most likely artifactual and due to factors such as occlusion, with resulting moisture in the intertriginous areas, or to other as yet unknown factors.
