摘要:
This Resource Letter has been prepared as a project of the AAPT Committee on Apparatus for Educational Institutions. It represents a response to questions raised at the 1978 winter meeting in San Francisco concerning sources of information on lecture demonstrations. Thus, this letter is aimed more at readers who have recently become interested in lecture demonstrations, rather than those who are already familiar with the literature. While the authors have examined a great deal of material, and have had help from many people, there are always materials which have been overlooked. Therefore, we earnestly request that any reader with suggestions or corrections please communicate with the authors so that they may be included in any future updating. Because of the introductory scope of this Resource Letter, we have not included all of the resources that are available. Most foreign works, books known to be out of print, items having small circulation, and textbooks and earlier editions bearing differing titles have been excluded. The reader may refer to the annotated bibliography by John A. Davis (Sec. I B5) for a more extensive listing of the literature. When possible, the annotations are followed by one or more reviews so that other opinions can be consulted.

摘要:
Galileo reported that if two balls with different densities are dropped simultaneously, the less dense ball will initially fall faster, but later lag behind the more dense ball. The authors observed this same behavior for a lead ball and a billiard ball of different size. Numerical calculations show that due to the complex dependence of the drag coefficient on the velocity and size of a ball, it is possible under certain coditions to drop two balls simultaneously and find that one initially lags behind but then passes the other. However, the specific behavior observed by the authors, and probably Galileo also, was most likely due to a systematic error in the dropping apparatus.

摘要:
The exact solutions of classical nonlinear field equations which describe pulselike waves that are collisionally stable are known as solitary waves. The properties of these solutions are reviewed. Several of the classical equations which exhibit this type of solution are discussed. Examples of current uses in physics research are given for each field equation discussed.

摘要:
We present two exercises involving rapid compression and expansion of ideal gases. The exercises are useful teaching tools and illustrate the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The first problem involves the conversion of gravitational energy into heat through mechanical work. The second involves the mutual interaction of two gases through an adiabatic piston. Both local and global versions of the second law can be applied to this second exercise. Both problems are also treated by numerical fluid dynamics.

摘要:
We present a canonical treatment of the damped harmonic oscillator. The Hamiltonian is made simpler by means of a suitable canonical transformation. The ensuing equations of motion for the transformed canonical variables are then solved by the Hamilton‐Jacobi method.

摘要:
It is argued that experimental physics cannot be taught effectively in the traditional undergraduate laboratory which requires a student to follow a detailed set of instructions in order to ’’verify’’ a textbook theory or some other ’’known’’ result. In place of such methods, it is proposed that the student be presented, in ascending order of complexity, a series of problems or projects in experimental physics under conditions resembling as closely as is feasible those of a research laboratory.

摘要:
The ’’design’’ of a simple radio telescope is proposed as a multidisciplinary exercise, bringing together radioastronomy, electronics, and the theory of structures. The telescope can be built by relatively inexperienced students and used to observe Jupiter bursts as well as the quiet sun (under favorable conditions).

摘要:
A derivation is given for the matrix representation of an arbitrary boost, i.e., a Lorentz transformation without rotation. The derivation utilizes standard vector and matrix techniques along with the well‐known form for a special Lorentz transformation. However, it is done in such a way as to avoid a possible confusion over the meaning of parallel axes. Consequently it is believed to be suitable for students with modest backgrounds in mathematics and relativity.

摘要:
The notion of asymptotic freedom in quantum chromodynamics is ’’explained’’ on general physical grounds, without invoking the formal arguments of renormalizable quantum field theory. The related concept of quark confinement is also discussed along the same line.
