摘要:
I believe that people become vitally interested in their studies and learn best when direction and guidance from a source of authority are combined with ample opportunities for the students to direct and control their own learning. The former may be called instructional input, the latter student autonomy. Hence the phrase ’’autonomy and input’’ characterizes a teaching program that balances these two factors. Yet one must also consider the relation between these two elements. They may be uncoordinated as in a physics course with lectures (input) and concurrent but independent open laboratories (student autonomy). Alternatively, the course might provide for more interaction between the two elements when the lectures (input) respond to questions or issues raised during previous investigations (autonomy) and follow‐up investigations provide for applications of the new material.

摘要:
The term sweet spot is used in describing that point or region of a tennis racket where the ball should be hit for optimum results. There are several definitions of this term, each one based on different physical phenomenon. In this paper the different definitions are discussed and methods are described to locate the points corresponding to each one.

摘要:
We present a simple introduction to the basic physical ideas involved in the flux quantization number carried by systems such as magnetic monopoles and vortices. By using simple geometrical arguments, we see that the flux number is associated with a hidden symmetry in gauge theory that is topological in origin.

摘要:
This paper reports on the implementation and impact of a two‐semester mastery‐oriented astrophysics sequence for upper‐level physics–astrophysics majors designed to handle flexibly a wide range of student backgrounds. A Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) format was used, which facilitated frequent student–instructor interaction and role‐modeling behavior in class. Compared to students’ reactions to the same content in a lecture format, students reported the mastery‐oriented courses as helping them better to develop professional skills, competencies, and points of view; learn how professionals gain new knowledge in astrophysics; develop skills in oral and written expression; and learn fundamental principles and theories. These attitudes held up over three years of course development and evaluation.

摘要:
Spark‐recorded speed and distance data for a freely falling body are analyzed by the method of least squares to obtain the acceleration due to gravityg. It is found that the resistance and buoyancy of the air produce systematic errors that are not negligible. These factors are taken into account both by an approximate correction and by an exact nonlinear least‐squares analysis of the data. From a wind tunnel measurement the drag coefficient of the falling body is found to beCD= 0.63±0.03. Then from the distance data for ten trials we obtaing= 9.8012 ±0.0035 m/sec2. This value agrees with the nominal value ofgfor our location, 9.8026 m/sec2, within one standard deviation.

摘要:
A single course to introduce physics to both nonscience and physics majors has been developed, dealing with light, sound, and signal, transmission and reception, and emphasizing wave aspects of these phenomena. Themes such as the observational basis of physics, the progression from qualitative observation to measurement, physical models, mathematical modeling, and the utility of models in developing technology are stressed. Modes of presentation, consistent with the notion of a spiral syllabus, are explained with reference to the cognitive and educational theories of Bruner and Piaget. Reasons are discussed for choosing this subject matter in preference to Newtonian mechanics as a starting point for physics majors.

摘要:
Multiple‐choice tests are becoming more and more common in physics classes. In the construction of such tests, attention to certain details will minimize the effects of random guessing. In addition, it has been found that for the majority of students, when a reasonable number of tests are given on a schedule throughout the semester the cumulative grade from such tests can provide essentially the same information as would hand‐graded problems.

摘要:
An alternative choice for the energy flow vector of the electromagnetic field is proposed by discarding a term ∇×(φ H) from the Poynting vector. This new choice for the energy flow vector is in harmony with our ordinary intuitions, and yields Larmor’s radiation formula for an accelerated charge.

摘要:
The infinite square‐well potential in one dimension is solved using Feynman path integration. This solution uses an image point method equivalent to a sum over classical paths.
