摘要:
Prepared at the request of the AAPT Committee on Resource Letters; supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. This is one of a series of Resource Letters on different topics, intended to guide college physicists to some of the literature and other teaching aids that may help them improve course content in specified fields of physics. No Resource Letter is meant to be exhaustive and complete; in time there may be more than one letter on some of the main subjects of interest. Comments and suggestions concerning the content and arrangement of the letters as well as suggestions for future topics will be welcomed. Please send such communications to Professor Joel E. Gordon, Chairman, Resource Letter Committee, Department of Physics, Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts.Additional copies: Available from American Institute of Physics, 335 East 45 Street, New York, New York 10017. When ordering, request Resource Letter ColR-1, and enclose a stamped return envelope.

摘要:
The paper describes in detail an upper-division one-semester physics course in experimental optics and spectroscopy. It is felt that such a course would be of considerable importance for inclusion in the upper division curriculum. This may, to some extent, help bridge the gap between the introductory laboratory and experimental research.

摘要:
The relativistic transformation of measurements from one observer S to another observer S′ is valid, of course, only when both observers are measuring the same physical quantity. What is the same quantity is, however, not a trivial problem in relativity. As a matter of fact, two different definitions have already been used in the literature, without realizing that they were not equivalent. Some of the pitfalls of such a confusion are discussed.

摘要:
There is an increasing current interest in the philosophy and history of physics. This paper discusses an interesting and important (but relatively little known among physicists) controversy in the history of theories of space and time, the Leibniz-Clarke correspondence. Leibniz represents the relativist view of space and time. Clarke, a disciple of Newton, upholds the absolute space and time of Newtonian mechanics.

摘要:
It is generally supposed that distinctly quantum-mechanical effects do not show up on the macroscopic level. However, it is shown here that the uncertainty principle imposes a drastic limit on the predictability of the detailed motion of a collection of colliding hard spheres, or “billiard balls.”

摘要:
The one-boson Lee model is used as a simple example for demonstrating how the methods of dispersion theory can be used to calculate state vectors, wavefunction renormalization constants, and self-energies without having to solve eigenvalue equations. This method of solution has been applied successfully to the original Lee model; in this paper we give some analogous calculations at a more elementary level. The same point of view was taken in a previous paper where the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann formalism was used to solve the first nontrivial sector of the one-boson case.

摘要:
The attempt to set out an exact codification of “scientific method” would result in a vast over-simplification of the practice of science. G. S. Ohm's laboratory notebooks of 1825 and 1826, in which he records his experiments on current electricity in resistive circuits, afford an excellent example of the procedure of science with its interplay of theory and experiment. In them, improvements in procedure and in apparatus parallel and complement advances in the theory.

摘要:
A classical operator exp(α x), for the rotation of a vector about an angleα, is presented. Some properties are derived and its usefulness is illustrated in a quantum-mechanical calculation. The operator easily dispenses from specifying coordinates in three dimensional configurations, extending in this way the usefulness of rotors and cross products.

摘要:
It is noted that Debye shielding between charges in a one-fluid plasma, and under certain conditions in a two-fluid plasma, can be represented formally by coupling the charges to a field of isothermal plasma oscillations. The field-theoretic calculation required in such a model would be equivalent mathematically to the coupling of point sources to a field having quanta of nonzero mass, and so the resulting potentials would have the same form, as is known to be the case in the usual thermodynamic model for Debye shielding.
