A new method for calculating the dc output voltage for a capacitance−input ripple filter is presented. Its predictions are much more accurate than those of the usual simple formula given in introductory textbooks. It proves possible to attain this increased accuracy with only elementary calculus and minimal arithmetic largely due to an interesting averaging property of a portion of a sine wave.

The object of this paper is to show that the angular dependence of the Rutherford scattering of alpha particles from foils is by no means an easy problem, but if sufficient care is taken, it provides a very satisfactory experiment for an advanced undergraduate teaching laboratory. Moreover, if the alpha particle energy is simultaneously investigated as the angle is changed, then the energy of the recoiling raget nucleus and the alpha particle energy loss through thin foils can also be measured.

Fraunhofer perfected methods for making optical glass and for testing its quality. He studied the dark lines in the spectrum of sunlight and used them to chart the dispersion of optical material with a precision spectrometer. He used scientific methods to produce truly excellent achromatic and aplanatic lenses, and optical instruments including astronomical refracting telescopes of large aperture. He analyzed diffraction patterns with precision; discovered the spectroscopic uses of gratings; made gratings ruled with up to 7670 lines/in., and determined wavelengths of Fraunhofer lines to four significant figures. He also noted the phenomenon of grating blaze, the polarizing effect of gratings, and effects of periodic errors in the rulings.

Editor’s Note: Satyendranath Bose, known primarily as one of the co−founders of quantum statistics, died on 4 February 1974, a few weeks after a symposium in honor of his 80th birthday was held at the Saha Institute for Nuclear Physics in Calcutta. The following paper, originally prepared in that connection, reviews some of the more important developments in particle physics which followed from the fundamental insight contained in a four−page paper published by Bose exactly fifty years ago. At the request of the editors of the AJP, Professor Sudarshan has kindly consented to adapt his paper for reproduction here. A graphical method is illustrated to treat reflection and transmission of a plane wave by a stationary boundary. The method is simple and useful in introducing Snell’s law, critical angles, evanescence, backward waves, and in dealing with wave behavior at interfaces separating nonisotropic, linear media.

摘要:

An introductory physics course entitled ’’Introduction to Physics and Biophysics’’ has been developed and implemented for life science students at Western Kentucky University. This paper describes the objectives of the course, presents a topical syllabus, and points out particular topics given special consideration. Pertinent student characteristics and comments concerning the course are also presented. As a result of the successful implementation of this course, a biophysics minor has been initiated and twelve students will graduate this year with a minor in biophysics. A laboratory is also being developed to accompany this lecture course.

The computer is a relatively new device in teaching physics. Experience is necessary to determine how it can be used in the most effective way. This paper oulines a variety of uses which have proved successful with physics students at the University of California, Irvine. The types of usage are (1) diagnostic remedial, (2) games, (3) interactive proofs, (4) alternate mathematical paths, and (5) controllable universes.
