摘要:
We describe the structure of a three‐semester sequence of self‐paced, mastery oriented astronomy courses developed at the University of South Carolina for nonscience majors. The course as structured is able to handle large enrollments with a successful completion rate as high as in a lecture format. Factors leading to this success are considered.

摘要:
The use of a computer in the undergraduate astrophysics course is useful in presenting the radiative transfer processes in a stellar atmosphere. The students experiment on a computer model to determine how the properties of the star, the temperature and opacity, determine the nature of the observed spectrum of a star. Sample results of the students’ experimentation are presented.

摘要:
The design of a pendulum that can demonstrate the dependence of period on amplitude is described. Common laboratory supplies are used for construction, and timing is done with a stopwatch. A small computer may be used for theoretical analysis without need for detailed study of differential equations, elliptic functions, or perturbation theory. Agreement between experimental data and theory to 1 part in 103is conveniently obtainable.

摘要:
When two hard solid objects collide, acoustic waves are generated at the point of impact. The deformation of the objects and their subsequent separation are associated with the propagation of these acoustic waves through the objects and their reflection from the surfaces. In this paper we follow the time development of these processes in detail for one‐dimensional collisions involving Hooke’s law springs. We calculate the degree of inelasticity of the collision from the state of internal excitation of the springs after separation occurs. An attempt is made to generalize the conclusions obtained in this one‐dimensional model to the qualitative description of the collision of hard spheres.

摘要:
The Euler–Lagrange equations in classical field theory are not covariant with respect to a transformation of independent variables. A modified covariant version of these equations is presented. The modification consists of replacing the partial derivative ∂/∂qiby the Hermitian quantum mechanical momentum operatorpiconjugate to the coordinateqi. This momentum operator is given bypi=−ih/[∂/∂qi+(1/2) ∂/∂qi(lnJ)], whereJis the Jacobian of the transformation.

摘要:
An exact solution is given for the precessional motion of the spin four‐vectorSin a constant magnetic field based on the covariant equations of Bargmann, Michel, and Telegdi. Its relation to the nonrelativistic solution is explicitly demonstrated.

摘要:
The interaction of a ’’scalar’’ chargees(even underT) and a ’’pseudoscalar’’ chargeep(odd underT) is investigated in the framework of classical mechanics. We show that the most general force consistent with the conservation of linear momentum and angular momentum is F=esep(r×v)/cr3, wherecis a constant. This is just Dirac’s force between electric and magnetic charges. No use is made of Maxwell’s equations. With the single assumption that the forces can be expressed in terms of vector and axial vector fields, we can derive exact expressions for the fields and then for the forces between two scalar and two pseudoscalar charges. These forces, in turn, are found to be identical with those of Coulomb and Biot–Savart. The theory retainsPconservation andTinvariance in both Newton’s laws of motion and the expressions for the fields.

摘要:
The Runge–Lenz vector is determined in a rotating coordinate system, for nonrelativistic Kepler motion modified by an inverse cube force. In the rotating coordinate system the problem reduces to that of nonrelativistic Kepler motion. Using the Runge–Lenz vector it is shown how to obtain the classical orbit equation and the quantum mechanical energy eigenvalues. Attention is confined to classical motion between two turning point method can be extended to other kinds of motion that are possible in this force field.
