Two teacher-made tests dealing with physics terminology were constructed and administered to four groups of students in two general physics courses. Each test consisted of an essay and multiple-choice part. Test reliabilities tended to be higher for the essay parts. The grader reliabilities of the essay parts were high, but there were significant differences between the mean grades by two instructors. The correlation coefficients between the test scores and total course achievement were moderately high. The correlations tended to be higher for the multiple-choice tests. It was tentatively concluded that (1) multiple-choice and essay tests on definitions had low to moderate correlations with each other and (2) multiple-choice tests of physics definitions were fair to good predictors of achievement in general college physics.

An experiment on Compton scattering of gamma rays using low-activity gamma-ray sources usually requires a multichannel pulse-height analyzer if the experiment is to be completed within a reasonable length of time. Herein is described a method not requiring such an analyzer, yet permitting the use of a radioactive source of such low activity as to be available license free. The experiment is within the scope of colleges only modestly equipped. The technique is not restricted to Compton scattering only, but may be used generally for nuclear spectroscopy studies.

A method is described for observing the precession of the spin axis relative to the body axes of a rotating steel ball. The ball is magnetized and is made to spin at 2000 rps in a shaped air column. A sensing coil detects any change in the axis about which the ball spins. The observed precessional frequency must be analyzed statistically and the statistical variation is discussed. Several other related experiments are presented.

A new and unique type of science lecture hall has been constructed on the Berkeley Campus of the University of California. Known as the “Physical Sciences Lecture Hall” this facility seating 550 students incorporates a large rotating stage and closed-circuit television. The rotating stage 40 ft in diameter has three complete lecture-room fronts, in the form of an equilateral triangle, and each has all laboratory utilities permanently connected to all lecture tables. The stage permits full demonstration lectures to be given every hour of the day. Sixteen TV picture tubes, suspended by hoists from the ceiling, and two vidicon TV cameras, one operated by the instructor and the other by remote control, make all lecture room demonstrations and activities visible to everyone.

A relatively inexpensive scattering chamber and associated apparatus for performing the Rutherford scattering experiment in laboratory and lecture demonstrations is described. Typical data from a 30-min lecture demonstration is discussed. Features of the apparatus include a silicon surface barrier detector, externally controlled angle settings, and the applicability of the apparatus to a number of experiments for the undergraduate.

The unique characteristics of experimental data obtained from the directional ejection of atoms from metallic single crystals subjected to ion bombardment are discussed. The advantages, for instructional purposes, are outlined. Simple experiments are described that are designed to give the beginner in crystallography a working familiarity with (1) crystal directions, (2) techniques for orientation determinations, and (3) anisotropic characteristics of crystals. All experiments described may be performed with simple and inexpensive equipment.

A treatment of the Faraday effect in an anisotropic plasma is presented. The plasma is treated as a fluid in which collisions may occur. Relations are derived for the rotation of the plane of polarization and the ellipticity of the electromagnetic wave in terms of parameters associated with the plasma.
