摘要:
For the class of ‘‘heliumlike’’ Hamiltonians,H=− 1/2 ∇21− 1/2 ∇22+V(r1)+V(r2)+W(r12), there is a fortuitous choice of (attractive)Vand (repulsive)Wpotentials such that the system admits of exact analytic solution in both classical and quantum pictures. Specifically, harmonic attraction and inverse‐cube repulsion forces result in a soluble three‐body problem (with infinite nuclear mass). We derive the general classical electron trajectories and give a complete set of eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian. We indicate how exact expectation values can be obtained and show that best fits to actual helium data require a nonzero repulsive coupling constant. We exhibit ans‐state basis subset of wave functions, suitable for application to general problems of atomic and chemical physics.

摘要:
An interpretation of the Lorentz–Dirac equation, and its first iterated version, is presented. The interpretation is based on the work of Teitelboim involving the bound and radiated four‐momentum of an accelerated charge.

摘要:
This paper describes a simple demonstration of the effect of an increase in temperature upon the performance of solar cells under concentrated light. It is shown that the expected increase of the open‐circuit voltage is offset by the temperature effect. This experiment should be quite relevant as an introduction to the study of concentration for undergraduate physics laboratories.

摘要:
The dispersion relations for waves on liquid surfaces are derived in terms of the Lagrange equations of an oscillator, with gravity and surface tension as restoring mechanisms. This derivation only requires the continuity equation and the assumption of irrotational flow, but not the Bernoulli equation.

摘要:
A simple approximate method based on variational principles is used to obtain energy eigenvalues for bound quantum systems. It is shown that the approximate eigenvalues satisfy both virial and Hellmann–Feynman theorems. Results obtained by this method are compared with the exact solutions of the Schrödinger equation.

摘要:
Holography is a new and exciting field that has found many applications in physics and engineering. Atomic spectroscopy has been the experimental cornerstone of modern physics and chemistry. This paper reports on an intermediate undergraduate laboratory experiment that combines fundamental ideas and techniques of both fields. The student utilizes holographic techniques to make a small sinusoidal diffraction grating and then uses this grating to analyze the spectrum of hydrogen. The Rydberg constant can be determined from the wavelength, the angle between the laser beams used to make the grating, and the observed diffractions angles of lines of the Balmer series.
