摘要:
Student credit hour (SCH) production data for physics departments in state institutions in Illinois for the 1973–1974 academic year have been compiled. Full‐time equivalent (FTE) faculty have been calculated and compared with actual numbers under the assumption that each department would be required to produce the same number of SCHs/FTE. Implications for present staffing patterns and problems of maintaining faculty size are discussed.

摘要:
Band‐mixing and decoupling factors are obtained for the coupling of an odd particle to a deformed core. The derivation avoids the use of commutation rules in a rotating frame and is easily generalized to more microscopic models of deformed nuclei.

摘要:
A pedagogic experimental and theoretical study of the motion of the simple pendulum, which considers corrections to the approximation of simple harmonic motion, is presented. The period is calculated with the use of both elliptic integrals and the perturbation theory of Kryloff and Bogoliuboff. Measurements of the period of the pendulum taken with a stopwatch are compared with the calculations. The errors made in the measurements are analyzed.

摘要:
The conceptually simple charge cloud model of atomic and molecular structure is applied to three problems: atomic hydrogen, molecular hydrogen, and crystalline lithium hydride. Because of its simplicity, the model lends itself well to calculations that are easily performed by undergraduates. While the calculations are, on the whole, only in modest agreement with experimental results, the model provides useful insights in all the areas to which it is applied.

摘要:
Two elementary algebra word problems are presented which have answers helpful enough in the derivation of the effects of special relativity that little else need be added in this derivation. The two problems are entirely in the classical setting before any reference is made to relativistic assumptions. The chance for confusion related to relativistic assumption is thus extracted and concentrated into a very short and direct part of the derivations for the contraction of lengths, retardation of time, and nonsynchronization of clocks. Thus these effects of the constancy of the speed of light follow immediately and directly from the assumption of the constancy of this speed in a way which elucidates the logical connection between the assumption and the effects.

摘要:
In this paper a formalism is developed that enables one to write down by inspection the matrix which represents the transformation between two coordinate systems, one of which is rotated by an angle ϑ about an arbitrary axis. Only the direction cosines of the rotation axis and ϑ need be known. It is pointed out that this transformation is not discussed in the usual treatments of classical mechanics.

摘要:
A lead sphere is suspended on a fishline attached to the vertical shaft of an electric motor which forces the sphere into uniform circular motion, making a conical pendulum. A mathematical treatment which considers the tension in the fishline and the gravitational force and their geometry reveals a critical length for the fishline. Using a length in excess of the critical allows a measurement of a distance which, when multiplied by the square of the angular velocity, givesg. Results agreeing to better than 1% with the accepted value ofgare easily obtained. The equipment is inexpensive. The experiment is presented for demonstration purposes primarily, but can be expanded in scope to be a laboratory experiment.

摘要:
The diffraction of light by a U.S. penny and an aperture of the same size with the light source and viewing screen 20 m from the objects has been investigated quantitatively. It was found that the diffraction by these relatively large objects involving such unusually long light paths could be adequately described by the scalar theory of Kirchhoff in the specialized form due to Lommel. Differences noted between the theory and the measurements are discussed, with probable causes indicated.

摘要:
We have measured the longitudinal shift of a microwave beam at total internal reflection. Good agreement with the prediction of classical electromagnetic theory is provided. The magnitude of the effect at microwave frequencies is conveniently large and the experimental setup used is sufficiently straightforward to allow this experiment to be repeated in an undergraduate laboratory program.
