The four nonzero light‐scattering matrix element curves for spheres near the Rayleigh and Rayleigh–Gans limit are calculated using Mie theory and compared as the respective limits are approached by a large, high‐refractive‐index Mie sphere.

A coarse grating and a narrow laser beam demonstrate a pattern of diffraction beads perpendicular to both the direction of rulings and the direction of the incident light. As the angle of incidence is changed, with the rulings still perpendicular to the incident light, the beads in the pattern separate along the same straight line. In contrast, we describe what is observed when the grating is rotated perpendicular to the above. The bead pattern now forms the arc of a circle. We derive the expressions for the patterns and present photographic illustrations.

A table‐top demonstration model which simulates the orientational ordering of diatomic molecules on two‐dimensional lattices is described. Fundamental ideas and phenomena concerning collective excitations (libron waves) and the effects of disorder on frustrated systems are illustrated by means of simple demonstrations.

This paper examines the apparent ‘‘gained’’ and ‘‘missed’’ energy associated with the omnidirectional constructive and destructive interferences of electromagnetic wave radiated from two closely spaced sources. While widespread misconceptions concerning the phenomena, as reflected in semipopular science writing, have been partially corrected in a recent article employing qualitative arguments, no rigorous treatments of the problem have been available. This article presents a theoretical analysis of the problem and concludes that the phenomena are attributable to the effect of mutual coupling between the sources.
