摘要:
Using the thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes, a general equation is derived for the solution potential of a multicomponent fluid containing both charged and uncharged species situated in a gravitational or centrifugal field. The argument fully takes into account the irreversible processes of sedimentation and diffusion, and it is shown rigorously how the Hittorf transference numbers of ions and nonelectrolytes enter into the expression. The cell emf is derived and specialized for three cases of experimental interest; the concentration cell with transference, the homogeneous solution in the field cell, and the sedimentation equilibrium cell. These equations are applied to three common electrode systems with a single binary electrolyte in a single neutral solvent.

摘要:
A survey of grades in Engineering Physics I at Kansas State College showed that the inner structure of the course was highly consistent. The correlation coefficient between the average of the first three tests and the final grade was about 0.88. More significantly, valuable prognostic data could be obtained from the final grade in the course. The correlation coefficient between the Engineering Physics I grade and the final grade point average of students who completed the course was about 0.83. Only 21% of the students initially failing the course successfully completed an engineering degree, while about 75% of theA,B, andCstudents eventually graduated from an engineering curriculum.

摘要:
Many standard textbooks treat interference in an optical wedge quite inadequately. Elementary treatments of this problem often leave much confusion about the exact conditions under which the fringes are formed and observed. Here a unified introductory treatment is presented both for two-beam and multiple-beam interference. Special attention is given to the localization of the fringes around the wedge. Factors governing the fringe visibility are examined.

摘要:
Some of the current problems in science education (principally at the secondary school level) are discussed, and several possible methods of ameliorating present conditions are mentioned. The danger of “over-professionalizing” science instruction—to the detriment of the contribution science can make to the education of the nonscientist—is emphasized.

An experiment is described in which an inexpensive, commercially available cell is used. Values of the Kerr constant for nitrobenzene determined by this method are given for the spectral range from 4600 A to 8800 A.

摘要:
The dynamical principle underlying nonrelativistic classical particle mechanics is stated in a way which brings it into exact analogy with the quantum principle. The classical equations of motion for a dynamical variable are then displayed in forms analogous to the Schrödinger, Heisenberg, and interaction forms in quantum theory.
