A highly developed microscopic theory of the helium liquids exists based on the Schrödinger equation involving realistic forms of the interaction potential between pairs of neutral atoms. This report is a tutorial review of the microscopic theory with emphasis on the method of correlated basis functions. Among the topics considered are potentials, distribution functions, consequences of the correspondence principle, working approximations for the three-particle distribution function, useful matrix elements, sum rules, the paired-phonon function space, trial forms for the ground state of the boson system, distribution of particles in momentum space, elementary excitations, basis functions, and matrix elements for liquid3Heand for the dilute solution of3Hein liquid4He.

The representations of point groups appropriate to spin-12particles is usually determined by consideration of a group of double the order of the point group under consideration, known as the double group. An alternative approach is described which makes use of ray representations. The character tables for the 32 crystallographic point groups are derived simply by means of this approach.

An experiment for the freshman laboratory is described, in which the essential features of the Brownian motion are given by a simplified model based on momentum-conservation principles, using the Monte Carlo technique. Calculations are carried out by a computation scheme based on computer language.

The use of games for teaching introductory physics is discussed. The elements of game design are reviewed, and seven examples are described that illustrate different varieties of teaching games suitable for use by beginning physics students.

Mechanical systems are described which serve as analogs to phenomena connected with the time independent Schrödinger wave equation. The constraints necessary to effect a correspondence between the solutions of the time independent analog wave equation and those in the Schrödinger case are pointed out. The parameters in the mechanical systems which correspond to energy, mass, etc., in the Schrödinger case are arrived at, and the quantitative limits of these parameters for physical meaningfulness are discussed. The feasibility of selecting real materials for the construction of the analogs is established.

Three student experiments in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) are described which show that the electrical conductivity of the local water supply(∼3×10−3 mho/m)can be sufficient to produce observable effects. Measurements are made of the distribution of induced voltage along a diverging duct, the power extracted from a duct under load, and the change in the pressure gradient along a duct produced by an applied MHD body force.
