摘要:
Electron beams of low energy (100–200 eV) and low current (<25 μA) are rendered visible by introducing appropriate quantities of mercury vapor, for example, by temporarily lowering a cooling trap. Paths of beams in the presence of objects are photographed.

摘要:
A formulation of electromagnetic theory in generalized units is used to derive a scheme which is capable of transforming the measures and units of any electromagnetic quantity, and of converting any electromagnetic formula between arbitrary systems of electrical units.

摘要:
The construction of a pulsed ruby laser and output measuring devices, built as a two-year undergraduate student project, is outlined. By using a silvered glass cavity with a linear flash-tube, thresholds as low as 180 J were obtained, and an energy output in excess of 0.20 J was observed at an input of 650 J. Emphasizing design and construction at all stages as opposed to acquisition of ready-made components, an attempt was made to use as many locally available parts as possible.

摘要:
An experiment is described which enables the student to study a simple harmonic oscillator as it changes from classical behavior to that which must be described quantum mechanically. The oscillator is the F center in KCl. A configuration coordinate diagram is used to show that the width of the center's optical absorption is proportional to the amplitude of oscillation of the ions surrounding the center. The width of the optical absorption is measured from 300 to 20°K, effectively giving the amplitude of oscillation over this temperature range. Below 50°K the amplitude does not change, indicating the zero-point oscillation. The results can be described by an expression for the amplitude as a function of temperature which is deduced from the correspondence principle.

摘要:
It is suggested that an electronic energy-level diagram that includes a molecule and some of its possible dissociation products on a single scale is a useful summary of widely scattered experimental results. Since such diagrams seem to be rare in both the original and the textbook literature, four illustrations are offered. These consist of some lower energy levels available to the respective atomic combinations:2Na,2N+O,2H+C+O, and4H+4C+2N.

摘要:
An early paper (1932) by Majorana, that has received but scant attention, is reexamined
in light of later developments. This pioneering paper constructs a relativisticallyinvariant theory
of arbitrary spin particles, develops and utilizes infinite dimensional representations ofthe homogeneous Lorentz
group, and provides a mass spectrum for elementary particles. Therelevance of Majorana's approach and results to later and current research is
explained.

摘要:
The Atomic Energy Act of 1946, with its later amendments, directed the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to conduct research, development, and training in the field iof atomic energy. These activities were initially retained within the national laboratories and other AEC sites because the major portion of nuclear technology was classified. As declassification proceeded, the AEC started an intensive program of educational assistance activities in order to help the academic community develop its own nuclear education capabilities. These activities were supported by cooperative programs at the national laboratories. The assistance described consists of providing teachers and other scientists with opportunities to up-date their scientific knowledge, to conduct research, to participate in institutes, to obtain specialized training; providing graduate and postdoctoral fellowships, and research opportunities to students. It further provides support for special schools offering nuclear eduational opportunities too specialized for colleges and universities; and provides scientific lectures and funds for specialized equipment to nonprofit educational institutions. The national program is described briefly. Special emphasis is given to those programs operated by the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies.

摘要:
A discussion of propagators (Green's functions) and methods for calculating them for the simplest systems in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics is given from several points of view. The relevance of such techniques to partition function calculations is pointed out. Finally, a simple perturbation theory is given for the case of the free particle.

摘要:
A course has been developed designed to acquaint the nontechnical student in the humanities with nuclear energy and its applications in many areas affecting human affairs. Course content includes atomic and nuclear structure, applications of radioisotopes, reactors, fusion research, nuclear explosives, and accelerators. Other than the relativistic transformations, the radioactive-decay law and the cyclotron equations are the only relations occurring of any complexity. Socio-economic considerations are treated briefly as they arise. Results are given of a questionnaire examining the extent of misinformation on nuclear energy matters.
