摘要:
The purpose of this article is to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Heinrich Rudolf Hertz by reprinting his famous lecture on the relations between light and electricity delivered before the German Association for the Advancement of Natural Science and Medicine at Heidelberg on September 20, 1889.

摘要:
By use of the complex variable, an attempt is made to obtain simple expressions for the Maxwell stress components in the case of two-dimensional electrostatic fields, when the dielectric material is homogeneous and effects of electrostriction can be neglected. Examples are given to illustrate how the results may be interpreted, with emphasis on the stress distribution at the interface separating two ideal dielectrics.

摘要:
It is pointed out that thermodynamics is a useful subject in widely varying fields, such as engineering, chemistry, and physics. It is, however, used in such different ways by scientists in these fields, that one group hardly recognizes what the other is doing. Some of the controversies in the nomenclature of thermodynamics are mentioned and some of the changing styles in thermodynamics are explained in terms of the thermocouple. Some unfortunate tendencies in the teaching of thermodynamics are deplored. The author ends with a tribute to many of his former students.

摘要:
The influence of more than one instructor upon learning in college physics was determined statistically. Results indicated significant differences in student achievement with regard to the acquisition of factual physics knowledge, whereas no significant differences were evidenced with regard to the acquisition of physics problem-solving abilities.

摘要:
The author has felt that the transition from the elementary to the intermediate laboratory may sometimes be too abrupt, and that while the student is getting accustomed to the more advanced laboratory he misses some of the important points in the early experiments he performs. The experiment described is designed to accustom the student to the new level of experiments, and give him some insight into some fundamental principles of experimentation. The experiment consists of measuring a resistance by several different methods. The results are then compared, and the relative merits of the methods are discussed. The methods used are the ohmmeter, the voltmeter-ammeter method, the Wheatstone bridge, the potentiometer, and the substitution method. Details of these measurements will be discussed.

摘要:
The Scholarship Awards Program of the Chesapeake Section, AAPT, is described giving details on the planning and arrangements for the program, initiated in the 1955–1956 academic year and open to seniors in over 800 secondary schools in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Some problems which have arisen in connection with the program are discussed.

摘要:
The author describes the historical background on antiparticles and the experimental work that led to the discovery of the antinucleons. Many of the properties of the antiproton which can be predicted exactly on the basis of Dirac's theory have been verified. The outstanding problem is now to find the other properties which cannot be predicted on the basis of Dirac's theory and a start in this direction has been made. The latest experiments on cross-section measurements and modes of annihilation are described.

摘要:
Vectors represented by thin rubber tubing may be used to illustrate the polygon rule for vector addition in three dimensions. The elastic model lends itself to illustrate multiplication by a scalar, the difference between vectors, a displacement vector which varies with time and the fact that the time derivative of a displacement vector is tangent to the trajectory even when it is not a plane curve.
