摘要:
Since 1966, a laboratory course in plasma physics has been offered at Stanford. Fourteen experiments have been developed, illustrating a wide variety of methods of producing plasmas, diagnostic techniques, and plasma properties. The evolution of the course is described, and brief descriptions of the experiments are given.

摘要:
A summary of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s color studies is presented with special attention paid to his ’’method.’’ It is proposed that the act of accurate qualitative observation creates the capability in the observer for an intuitive understanding of the physical laws underlying the phenomena under observation. The use of such a method as a basis for laboratory instruction is discussed.

摘要:
The difficulties facing small colleges in setting up and operating a freshman laboratory have received little attention in print. The two main problems are limited funds for purchasing laboratory equipment and the small size of the staff. In an attempt to solve the first problem, some small colleges set up all the experiments in advance, and arrange for the students to perform them on a rotating basis. In this way, only one setup for each experiment is required. To deal with the staff shortage, we introduce a scheme in which the students, after proper initiation and orientation, take an active part in teaching one another under the guidance of the instructor. Routine report writing is avoided by having a laboratory logbook for each student, kept in the laboratory, in which he records his work and thoughts as he performs the experiment. We report on how these ideas worked in a small college in Iran.

摘要:
High school principals, guidance counselors, and physics teachers in the state of Wisconsin have been surveyed to determine their respective attitudes toward physics in the high school curriculum. The techniques for determining these attitudes are given. For comparison, attitudes toward biology and chemistry are also determined. The results indicate that the physics community should make a greater effort to inform principals and guidance counselors as to the value of physics in the high school curriculum.

摘要:
An exchange operator is defined in terms of rotation and displacement operators. This operator contains a rotation around thezaxis that produces a factor (−1)2sin front of the wave function. By postulating that such a rotation must produce the same value for the wave function if the particles are identical, we obtain the usual connection between spin and statistics. Particle states lying in the irreducible representations of the three‐dimensional rotation group are seen to allow only Fermi and Bose statistics.

摘要:
The gyromagnetic theorem of classic Maxwell theory states that, if the particles of a system have a uniform ratio of charge to mass, then the ratio of the system’s magnetic moment to its angular momentum, divided by the ratio of its total charge to twice the total mass, is exactly unity. It has long been recognized that, if the particles move at relativistic velocities, this is no longer true. It is shown in addition to this that, if the particles move at nonrelativistic velocities but the material source is very condensed, the contributions of the electromagnetic field to the system mass–energy and angular momentum raise the gyromagnetic ratio from unity to 3/2.

摘要:
A single geometrical diagram based on the Lenz vector shows the qualitative and quantitative features of all three types of Coulomb orbits. A simple analog computer can be made for an overhead projector by using this theory, and a number of interesting effects can be efficiently demonstrated.

摘要:
An efficient numerical method is described for calculating the Fermi energy, the free electron and free hole concentrations, and the ionized impurity concentrations in a semiconductor material. The method allows freedom with respect to type of material, temperature, and amount and type of donor and acceptor impurities.

摘要:
A treatment of the linear theory is given that closely parallels the usual E and B formulation of electromagnetic theory. In Part I, an introductory exposition of gravitational radiation is presented. The tidal gravitational field strength E is defined, and it is shown that E is the measurable quantity which characterizes a gravitational wave. The important point is made that the problem of detecting gravitational waves is really the same problem as detecting tidal accelerations due to a time‐varying Newtonian gravitational field. In Part II, the magnetic‐type gravitational field strength B is defined and Maxwell‐like field equations are used to determine the polarization states of a gravitational wave. The detection of gravitational waves by Weber‐type cylinders is discussed.

摘要:
The potentials of two concentric conducting spherical shells are calculated under the assumption that the force between two point charges varies asrδ−2. Maxwell’s result for small δ, which is required to interpret modern experiments, is obtained. The derivation uses only basic ideas of electrostatics and elementary calculus. The upper limits for δ that can be set by various experiments are also discussed.
