摘要:
Prepared at the request of the AAPT Committee on Resource Letters; supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. This is one of a series of Resource Letters on different topics, intended to guide college physicists to some of the literature and other teaching aids that may help them improve course contents in specified fields of physics. No Resource Letter is meant to be exhaustive and complete; in time there may be more than one letter on some of the main subjects of interest. Comments and suggestions concerning the content and arrangement of letters as well as suggestions for future topics will be welcomed. Please send such communications to Professor Joel Gordon, Chairman, Resource Letter Committee, Department of Physics, Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts.Notation: The letterEafter the item number means that the reference should be mainly useful forelementarycourses. In view of the complexity of the subjectelementarywill normally imply junior courses. The letterIindicates intermediate (senior and first-year graduates) andAindicates advanced (second-year graduates and students beginning research in Physics). An asterisk indicates items particularly recommended for introductory study.Additional copies: Available from American Institute of Physics, 335 East 45 Street, New York, New York 10017. When ordering, request Resource Letter LH-1 and enclose a stamped return envelope.

摘要:
A new method for classification of the gravitational field is presented. It is shown that this scheme leads to exactly the same types of gravitational fields as previously obtained by Petrov, Penrose, and Sachs, etc. Some physical applications are also given.

摘要:
The continued growth of vacuum technology as applied to research and engineering makes it important that students become acquainted with a typical vacuum system. This article describes a system which can be applied to the determination of the quantity of gas flowing through a cylindrical tube and to investigations on the passage of gas across a solid barrier (process of permeation). The vacuum system has been designed in such a way that the experiment can be accomplished in a 2- to 4-h laboratory period.

摘要:
A minority-majority notation is introduced which is supplemental and complementary to the hole-electron notation used in the mathematics of semiconductor theory. Together, the two notations provide the flexibility of expression necessary to explain more clearly and appropriately the mechanisms of charge-carrier behavior in semiconductors. It is explained that equations formulated with the minority-majority symbology are the general forms, and thus the necessity of committing general analyses to the separate cases of eitherN- orP-type transport media is obviated.

摘要:
A comparison is made between wave patterns in dispersive and nondispersive media on the basis of the interference patterns of two sine waves. The sine waves are assumed to be of equal amplitude and to have a common direction of propagation. For the dispersive medium, it is shown that the wave pattern observed as time varies at a given position is not the same as that found when considered as position changes for an instant of time. For corresponding intervals of space and time it is found that the snapshot contains a different number of individual oscillations than the sample at a single location. The difference is seen to increase as the component frequencies become more nearly the same.

摘要:
The paper discusses the erroneous interpretation of the double layer as a source of a presumed nonconservative field, and traces back that very old mistake to works of Ampere, Gauss, and Maxwell. That mistake is repeated by all authors up to the present time. It is shown that the magnetic double layer creates a strictly conservative field, which is not completely equivalent to the field of a filamentary current loop, since that field is nonconservative. It is further shown that the solid angle is a single-valued function with the step discontinuity, and by no means a multiple-valued function.

摘要:
A strain-gauge transducer suitable for measuring acoustic-level pressure fluctuations is described here. The wind tunnel determination of Strouhal number and fluctuating-pressure coefficients associated with a circular cylinder due to shedding vortices showed satisfactory agreement. The simple and inexpensive transducer has proved useful in the aeroelastic instability study of bluff cylinders.

摘要:
It is shown that the equation of motion of a linear dissipative system with one degree of freedom can always be derived from a suitably chosen variational principle. In the case of more than one degree of freedom, this is shown to be true only if the system satisfies a certain condition, which is explicitly given.

摘要:
A homogeneous canonical transformation reduces the free rotation of a solid body to a conservative Hamiltonian system with only one degree of freedom. This reduction permits the representation of all possible solutions of the Euler-Poinsot problem by isoenergetic curves in a phase rectangle. Such a diagram illustrates the stable or unstable character of a permanent rotation around an axis of inertia.
