摘要:
On the basis of a simplified depiction of liquids, solids, and gases, a qualitative discussion is presented of certain properties of liquids with spherically symmetric atoms: their melting and boiling heats and the corresponding temperatures, their coefficients of viscosity and self‐diffusion. Results are compared with data for neon, argon, sodium, aluminum, copper, silver, and mercury. Water is also included for order‐of‐magnitude comparison, although its molecules are not spherically symmetric and internal degrees of freedom cannot be neglected.

摘要:
The apparatus described is a model of a reflection seismic prospecting system. The observations and computations are the same as those made on commercial field records in the days before computerized data acquisition. The apparatus is used in a course in reflection seismology; others may find it useful in a physics class required for geology majors or in any class covering principles of acoustics.

摘要:
A collection of problems illustrating the electromechanical implications of Faraday’s law is presented. They are appropriate for well‐prepared freshmen and all undergraduate physics majors. A number of interesting examples are worked out analytically, including Thomson’s jumping ring demonstration. They are of interest in part because they include the effects of inductance and capacitance more fully than in the usual textbook treatments.

摘要:
The static elongation of a loaded spring is derived taking into account its own weight and the fact that a finite nonzero force is required to pull the spring apart. A simple experiment is described to verify that the static effective mass is equal to half of the total mass of the spring using a slinky. The experimental result is in good agreement with the theory.
