摘要:
The usual approach to the teaching of rotational motion in the introductory college physics course emphasizes centripetal acceleration and the rotation of rigid bodies about fixed axes. The approach outlined below may be used to extend, and in part to supersede, the usual approach. It is intended to strengthen the student's insight into the concept of angular momentum, and his understanding of the orbital motion and orbital stability of planets and satellites. An analysis of the system is based on energy considerations and on a frame of reference which rotates with the system. An apparatus is described by means of which one may demonstrate many of the characteristics of orbital motion and central forces.

摘要:
Considerable concern is now evident about the liberal arts college as a source of doctoral candidates in physics. Remedial steps have been proposed in the direction of research grants to provide incentives and funding for increasing staffs, special summer undergraduate programs for physics majors, and better articulation between college and graduate physics departments. These are reviewed in terms of their implications and feasibility, with the conclusion that the best hope for the immediate future lies in the recognition of good teaching as a desirable and creative activity at the college level, serious consideration of curriculum revision at the individual department level, and improved articulation between college and graduate school.

摘要:
The basic problem of physical geometry is to determine uniquely the geometry of physical spaces. According to Reichenbach, this can be done only after universal forces have been eliminated because such forces may impose any geometry upon a physical space by changing the measuring rods undetectably. An examination of his proof leads to a contrary statement: Universal forces may alter the shape of a physical space but they cannot change its geometry. Therefore, the geometry of a physical space can be determined uniquely from physical measurements after a unique system of space measurement has been established. As a consequence, the general theory of relativity in its present form seems no longer to be acceptable.

摘要:
The substitution of motion picture films for some lecture demonstration experiments would facilitate the continuous use of lecture halls by eliminating the necessity of allowing time between lectures for setting up and adjusting apparatus. This article gives the results of an experiment to measure the effects of such substitution on student achievement. The first physics course for engineering and physics majors was taught by two methods: (1) with conventional presentation of lecture demonstrations, and (2) with films substituted for some of the demonstrations. Students were randomly assigned to two classes and, within each class, to groups of seats at different distances from the lecture table. The same quizzes and examinations were given to all students. Statistical analyses of student scores indicate that: (1) presentation of lecture-demonstration experiments by film is as effective instructionally as the conventional method of presentation, and (2) student achievement is independent of the distance (up to 60 ft) between the student and the lecture demonstrations, irrespective of the two methods of presentation. The results of an informal study of voluntary use of films outside of class are also reported.
