摘要:
Prepared at the request of the AAPT Committee on Resource Letters; supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. This is one of a series of Resource Letters on different topics, intended to guide college physicists to some of the literature and other teaching aids that may help them improve course contents in specified fields of physics. No Resource Letter is meant to be exhaustive and complete; in time there may be more than one letter on some of the main subjects of interest. Comments and suggestions concerning the content and arrangement of letters as well as suggestions for future topics will be welcomed. Please send such communications to Professor Arnold Arons, Chairman, Resource Letter Committee, Department of Physics, Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts.Notation: The letters E, I, and A after an item indicate the level of biological knowledge (Elementary, Intermediate, or Advanced) necessary for comprehension.Additional copies: Available from American Institute of Physics, 335 East 45 Street, New York, New York, 10017. When ordering, request Resource Letter PB-1 and enclose a stamped return envelope.

摘要:
Multiple transforms are used to solve five partial differential equations subject to boundary and initial conditions. The simplifications over single transforms that result are: the reduction of the original equation and boundary relations to a single algebraic equation, the removal of singularities in the transformed time plane (splane) which do not originate from the physics of the problem and finally, the necessity for quoting a solution to an ordinary differential equation is removed. Because of these advantages, it is apparent that more attention should be paid to the method in mathematical physics courses.

摘要:
A workshop report on laser apparatus recommends the use of a visible gas laser for lecture demonstrations in optics, and teaching laboratories. Several experiments are suggested for senior students, such as optical heterodyning and the study of atomic processes in lasers. The use of a pulsed solid-state source is also discussed for experiments in fluorescence, Raman effect, and nonlinear processes such as optical harmonic generation.

摘要:
Discussion of the teaching of plasma physics is preceded by a review of its applications. These are sufficiently varied that plasma physics is of interest to, and has been taught by, many different university departments. Three possible “levels” for the teaching of plasma physics were considered and discussed. The first of these is the inclusion of plasma topics in existing physics and engineering courses. Specific examples of such topics for various courses are given. The second level is that of a “first course” in plasma physics. The possible content of such a course is discussed, with a recommendation that it be aimed at first year graduate students and selected seniors. The third level is that of a four-semester (four-quarter) sequence of courses, comprising one on atomic processes, and three on plasma dynamics. Special consideration was given to the role of experimental work in the teaching of plasma physics. It was considered desirable to present a few well planned experiments to undergraduates in their senior year or to first-year graduates. Some of the panel members drew up descriptions of simple experiments suitable for this purpose. Some of these are described in the accompanying articles by O. K. Mawardi; H. J. Schmitt; Russell J. Meyerand, Jr., and Robert H. Bullis; and James D. Hood; and others are referred to in the text.

摘要:
A review is given for the theory of operation of the single and double Langmuir probe. The method of using the double Langmuir probe for the purpose of measuring the temperature and density of electrons in a plasma is described. In the remaining part of this paper, a laboratory experiment using Langmuir probes is suggested and sample calculations pertaining to such an experiment have been given.

摘要:
A simple experiment to determine both the electron-density decay rate and the ambipolar diffusion coefficient in an afterglow plasma is presented. The method is based upon the detection of Tonks-Dattner radial column resonances and requires readily available equipment.

摘要:
A cesium-diode thermionic converter suitable for laboratory instruction is described. The construction of this converter employs only simple glass-blowing techniques so that it can be easily fabricated in a moderately, well-equipped physics laboratory. The use of kovar-to-glass seals and lead-glass sections has been completely eliminated, and the use of oxide glass-to-metal seals has been minimized in the construction of the converter, thereby significantly reducing the probability of cesium attack in seal areas which would seriously limit the useful lifetime of the device. Many interesting and instructive experiments involving thermionic power generation, arc-mode or ignited operation, spectroscopic studies, ion production on high work function surfaces, and the determination of converter current-voltage characteristics can be conducted with this device.

摘要:
A small-diameter linear shock tube suitable for laboratory demonstration is described in this paper. Necessary construction details are given along with a discussion of the instrumentation required to measure the velocity of the luminous shock front, the flow velocity of the expanding plasma, and the conductance of the plasma.

摘要:
Ordinary experimental gamma-ray absorption data can be graphed to closely approximate the theoretical self-absorption curves of W. R. Dixon. To do so emphasizes the point of Dixon's work for the student and gives additional insight into the nature of absorption. A method for accomplishing this is described.

摘要:
Certain conventional elementary ideas relating to the role of intermolecular attractions in liquids and gases are examined critically, and an effort is made to bring out a rationally defensible picture of the effects of these forces, without postulating the presence of any permanent, net force fields. A clear statement of the origin of surface tension is presented. The modification of pressure found in a real gas due to intermolecular attractions is shown not to be a boundary phenomenon. The need for a dynamic mechanism to account for this modification is pointed out.
