摘要:
The insight into scientific activity that is afforded by laboratory work is valuable for all college students, and it justifies increased academic support of this aspect of instruction. Students should experience the sorrows and joys of experimentation, rather than merely acquire technical skills. Encouraging results have been reported from institutions using various approaches to the “free” laboratory in which students are largely on their own as to procedure for attaining broadly presented goals. Departments should not allow the pressure of too great a range of material to cause the student to lose sight of the pleasure, excitement, and beauty of good laboratory work. Experiments dealing with “modern” physics are especially attractive. There is an unfilled demand for new and improved apparatus designed to meet the educational objectives of laboratory teaching. Adequate participation by senior staff members is essential for vital laboratory teaching. Various methods of keeping records and reporting results may be used to attain specific objectives. Evaluation of students, of teaching assistants, and of laboratory methods in the light of clearly formulated educational objectives is a problem that must be solved in order to insure that only worthwhile changes shall exert a permanent influence.

摘要:
A little-known demonstration in optics, the Christiansen filter, is described. A discussion of its merits and defects for demonstration or research work is included. Some new filter combinations for the visible region are described that are of special value for demonstration purposes. Special features of several are noted.

摘要:
A method of demonstrating coupled oscillatory motion between physical pendulums using a pair of selsyn motors as the coupling device is described. This type of electrical coupling makes possible the agreement of experimental and calculated values of the normal mode and energy transfer frequencies to better than 1%. Two methods for investigating the coupling as a function of the applied voltage are described and the results presented graphically.

摘要:
An addition to the elementary ballistic pendulum experiment is described. The basis of the addition is the use of a pump-action pellet gun of accurate bore whose projectile can be fired at a relatively small velocity. By determining the drop of the projectile over a horizontal distance of about 40 ft, its muzzle velocity can be calculated. Comparison of results with those of the usual experiment gives rise to errors of 5% or less.

摘要:
The reciprocity technique is used currently for primary microphone calibrations. The theory of this technique is developed in this article in a form suitable for physics students; it can be used as the basis of advanced experiments. Two types of reciprocity are first discussed. One, the electromechanical, applies to many practical transducers. The other, the acoustic reciprocity, is shown to be a special case of Green's theorem. One application is discussed. These two types of reciprocity are combined to derive the electroacoustic reciprocity constant. Finally, a method is outlined of using the electroacoustic reciprocity constant for primary microphone calibrations using only conveniently measured quantities.
