摘要:
We describe the principal modules of analog electronic music synthesizers and discuss some ways that we have used a synthesizer in demonstrations, psychophysical experiments, and an undergraduate laboratory course in the physics of music and acoustics. We consider the synthesis of both steady and transient auditory phenomena.

摘要:
A quantitative laboratory on geometrical optics has been designed for use in a noncalculus introductory physics laboratory for life science majors. The thin lens equation is used by the students to calculate the focal length of the lens necessary to correct a myopic condition in an optical bench simulation of a human eye. Criteria for choice of lenses for the model from standard laboratory apparatus are given.

摘要:
The vergence treatment of geometric optics provides both conceptual and algebraic advantages over the traditional object distance–image distance–focal length formalism. These advantages are particularly useful for the life science student. In this paper vergence is defined in terms of the curvature of the wave fronts, and some examples are given to illustrate the advantages of this approach.

摘要:
The returning‐type boomerang illustrates many of the principles of rigid body dynamics and some aerodynamic principles as well. Here is described an experimental project on boomerangs by members of an undergraduate course in classical mechanics. The students designed and made their own boomerangs, devised their own procedures, and carried out suitable measurements. Some of their data and a simple analysis for the two‐bladed boomerang are presented in this article.

摘要:
In most standard texts, the illustration of the least action principle proceeds through Lagrange’s equations. This approach is severely limited by the mathematical knowledge of the students. We prefer to adopt the experimental approach to mechanics, using air tables; that is, we first study conservation laws, with interactions at a distance as the second stage. We want to show that the least action principle enables both the trajectories and the conservation laws (of energy, momentum, and angular momentum) to be obtained without using Lagrange’s equations.

摘要:
Recently, Fourier spectroscopy has been discussed as a promising project to introduce into undergraduate physics laboratories. Such a project can have great educational value if the student who conducts the experiment and takes the data can conduct and observe every step of the analysis procedure as well. Fast Fourier analysis computer programs, although they provide great speed and flexibility, prevent the student from participating in the analysis of the experimental data and therefore make little contribution to the student’s understanding of the Fourier integral theorem. This paper presents a simple method of analysis whereby the student experimenter can integrate, point by point, any interferogram to obtain its Fourier transform. The manual technique requires no special equipment and is based on relationships that most undergraduate physics students can derive from the Fourier integral equations.

摘要:
One‐dimensional models for two‐electron systems resembling the helium atom and hydrogen molecule are studied using δ‐function potentials between all particles. It is noted that the essential features of the helium atom and hydrogen molecule ground states are exhibited by these models. The calculations are simple and useful pedagogical tools for illustrating the techniques used in more complicated and realistic calculations of energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.

摘要:
A materials science course laboratory, in which undergraduate students perform original experimental research studies of properties of materials which evidently have not been studied elsewhere, has been implemented at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in the College of Engineering. It is suggested that a materials science course laboratory is a uniquely well‐suited place in an undergraduate curriculum for allowing students to participate in an original research experience while they continue to acquire basic knowledge and skills. The motivations for planning such a student laboratory are discussed, and the manner in which this laboratory was implemented is described. The students carried out experimental measurements, reduced data, did literature surveys, and presented their results in the form of original research papers. The class was divided into a number of small groups. Each group was given a different rare earth alloy or metal to study. Measurements were made of electrical and mechanical properties. Data taken by each group were made available to the whole class. The laboratory is subjectively evaluated as a teaching/learning experience.

摘要:
It is argued that, in a Millikan oil drop experiment, there is a best measuring time for the experimenter to observe the drop because of the Brownian motion of the drop and the reaction time of the experimenter. An equation for the relative error for the excess charge observed on an oil drop is derived, and from it is obtained a formula for the best measuring time.
