Students of intellectual history establish a clear line of connection from Newton and Locke through the philosophy of the Enlightenment and the evolution of deism to the American political tradition reflected in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. This paper briefly traces the historical sequence and indicates readily available sources (mostly in paperback) in which students and lecturers can find deeper background and additional detail.

We report the major thrust of the Conference on Tradition and Change in Physics Graduate Education, held at Pennsylvania State University on 19−23 August 1974. %Most of the dialogue dealt with the employment problems of the physics community, particularly of its younger members, and with measures which might be taken at the graduate school level to alleviate these problems. %These measures involve a serious reexamination of our traditions and a deliberate set of innovations and diversifications to maintain physics as a viable career option.

摘要:
Through the use of a variety of inexpensive integrated circuits, students in a one−quarter introductory electronics course are able to design a large number of different types of useful circuits. Students design from very simple models of circuit behavior with complications treated as perturbations. The general approach is described and then its use is shown in a number of analog and digital applications.

The development of measuring equipment in modular form with digital readout is described. This equipment is adapted to the measurement of many physical quantities such as velocity, frequency, temperature, resistance, capacitance, etc. It is easier to use, faster, and more precise than conventional equipment and forms a firm basis for more advanced work.

摘要:
This paper is a reexamination of the concept of a canned computer lab. The canned computer lab uses a stored computer program to perform calculations, analyze data, determine errors, and to ask questions after a student performs a lab. Primary use of the canned lab is for computer−disadvantaged institutions with no on−line facilities. The educational and software advantages and disadvantages of this approach are discussed. Conclusions and anti−conclusions reached after over two years use of canned labs are given. An appendix gives a sample output for the ballistic pendulum lab.

摘要:
An innovative course for graduate teaching assistants at the University of California at Berkeley aims to familiarize %TAs with techniques besides lecturing (i.e., question−and−answer; discussion; small−group problem−solving) and to demonstrate how teachers’ classroom behaviors affect students’ learning. The format is threefold: (1) Each TA is videotaped while teaching; (2) each analyzes his videotape privately and with the instructor; (3) weekly seminars are held. The authors concluded that, as a result of this course: (1) TAs felt freer to experiment with a variety of techniques; (2) verbal interaction between students and TAs and among students increased; (3) TAs’ behavior changes were noted and appreciated by students.

From simple physical arguments based on adiabatic invariance, energy conservation, and energy quantization the radiation force f due to a reversible or weakly attenuated beam of light, sound, polarons, relativistic electrons, water waves, Seltzer bubbles, bathyspheres, or any other type of propagating energy in any isotropic medium is shown to be given by f = W/c = Eẋ/c where the beam is characterized by its power W, energy/length E, phase velocity c, and energy velocity = group velocity = particle velocity ẋ. Published data is found to be in agreement, although not to the exclusion of all other theoretical alternatives, and further experiments are suggested. Acceptance of this expression for f is shown to imply, in turn, that classical mechanics can be reformulated to embrace any zero− or finite−rest−energy particle. Geometrical optics and acoustics which become special cases are thus extended to the dynamics of classical photons and phonons.
