摘要:
Analytical results are provided for the mean-square displacement and velocity of the particles of a simple one-dimensional lattice with free ends in theT = 0°Kand high-temperature limits. It is pointed out that care must be used in generalizing from one to three dimensions since the mean-square displacement of a one-dimensional lattice depends on the number of particles. Despite this number dependence the results for the mean-square displacement can be used to show that the effective Debye temperature (as it would be measured by the Mössbauer effect or diffraction experiments) for a central atom is twice that of an end atom, in rough qualitative agreement with detailed three-dimensional calculations. Other effective Debye temperatures are also obtained.

摘要:
The 8-mm loop cartridge film described here is intended for teaching beginning quantum mechanics in the physics curriculum. It displays the solution of the time-independent Schrödinger equation (the energy eigenvalue equation) for the harmonic oscillator problem for linearly increasing values of energy, including noneigenvalues, and for two choices of boundary conditions at the origin. The film was made, with the exception of the titles, on a digital computer and a computer recorder. The possibility of other similar films is discussed briefly.

摘要:
A derivation of the conserved quantities arising from symmetries of the Lagrangian density under continuous transformations is reviewed with an eye to brevity and clarity. The derivation is sufficiently general to include virtually all cases of interest in field theory. Also covered is a separate and very short derivation which is valid only in the special case, frequent in quantum field theory, of internal symmetries where the transformations are independent of space-time. Some sources of confusion and error in the published accounts of the problem are noted.

摘要:
A simple Michelson interferometer and a red He-Ne laser were used to measure the visibility of interference fringes as a function of path-length difference of the two beams. The number and intensity of axial modes could thus be determined for various degrees of longitudinal coherence, obtained bydeadjustment of the laser-mirror system. The experiment may be used as a student exercise.

摘要:
Modifications of the MIT Rutherford Scattering Apparatus (Apparatus Drawings Project No. 16) are described. These include (1) use of a self-contained circuit for amplifying, analyzing, and counting pulses from the scintillation detector and (2) interchangeable foil holders which aid in the determination of background effects and which permit studies of scattering from various foils to be made. A description of the experiment performed by students at the University of Minnesota is given.

摘要:
This essay begins with considerations of the relational structure of a set of variables taken to represent a conceptual universe. A plausible argument is used to establish thenecessityfor a statistical description of any nonstatic set of such variables. A particular statistical description is then constructed based on a partition of the set of variables into two statistically independent sets. This statistical description is then shown to yield equations formally equivalent to familiar equations of thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and classical mechanics. This mathematical development is strongly suggestive of a unified way of looking at several divergent fields of physics.
