摘要:
Teaching physics with the aid of the Polygraphe, a recording milliammeter of great versatility, is a new teaching method rapidly developing in different French schools. In lecture demonstrations or in students' laboratory exercises this method provides graphs of great precision immediately usable for measuring purposes and for drawing curves of all sorts. In this paper, the psychological advantages of the Polygraphe as a teaching device are stated, and a few of its applications in elementary laboratory work are outlined.

摘要:
Appreciation of the physical characteristics of pure substances and mixtures in the vicinity of the critical state is difficult to obtain without direct observation. Demonstration equipment is described that permits the semiquantitative observation of the changes in state encountered during changes in volume of heterogeneous and homogeneous systems along a defined path in the vicinity of the critical state. The apparatus was so arranged that the appearance of the system and semiquantitative values of specific volume, temperature, and pressure may be projected on a screen for observation.

A demonstration of electrical transients is described, intended for classes in elementary electricity, which yields a graphic illustration of the addition of the transient and steady-state terms in the solution of the equation for a ringing circuit under ac excitation.

摘要:
The use of matrices for representing fundamental thermodynamic relations is demonstrated. Maxwell's relations and other thermodynamic derivatives are readily obtained by differentiation of the matrices defined.

摘要:
The derivation and verification of the values of the moments of inertia of simple solids such as rectangular blocks and cubes and combinations of two cubes and also of the regular polyhedra afford good exercise in theory and practice. The formulas lead readily from one to the next. The verification of the values obtained have been made with a torsion wire and frame plus a good stopwatch, and has afforded many hours of quiet pleasure.

摘要:
As a classical model for radiative capture, a current loop that has initially a moment of one Bohr magneton and that decays with a mean life of ħ divided by the transition energy is considered. The shape of the low energy end of the spectrum and the total number of photons produced per capture are given correctly.

摘要:
Two aids to the teaching of gyroscopic motion are given: (1) the precession of a gyro is discussed as a rotational analogy to the case of a stone whirling on the end of a string; (2) precession is explained qualitatively in terms of linear dynamics. As an example of precession a north-seeking gyro-compass is considered and a model described which illustrates its behavior.

摘要:
The failure of our educational system to produce as many physicists as are required for the national welfare challenges us to re-examine our introductory college physics courses. If one accepts the tenable idea that physics is a research activity, rather than a body of knowledge, he finds much to criticize in the aims and methods of these courses. Some changes which might help to remedy the faults of the traditional course are proposed and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Greater emphasis on the encouragement of independent thought is urged.

摘要:
A method of measuring a high resistance by means of an inverted triode voltmeter is described. Simple and inexpensive apparatus is used. Complete data for plotting the charge and discharge curves of a condenser may be obtained in a few minutes. Being suitable for the general physics laboratory, the experiment gives students good practice in using and analyzing exponential and logarithmic curves.

摘要:
In the study of radiation reflected from a surface, the concept of phase change appears to many students as some sort of “black magic” when introduced following the derivation of the Fresnel equations. This, however, is the point at which the concept is first considered by many texts. It seems that by appropriate introduction of phase change into the derivation of the Fresnel equations, a clearer understanding of this concept may be gained.
